Masked Singer David Foster Sings Kat McPhee’s Praises After Elimination

The Masked Singer fan-favorite Banana Split was revealed to be the married couple of superstar singer and actress Katharine McPhee and legendary musician, composer and record producer David Foster, who sang Katharine’s praises after their elimination. David and Katharine first met in 2006 when he mentored her during American Idol season 5. They were impressed by each other’s talents and became friends. They didn’t start dating until 2017 and got engaged in 2018. They were married in 2019, and, in February 2021, Katharine gave birth to their son, Rennie.

Katharine’s career launched after her second-place finish on American Idol, and her self-titled first album debuted in 2007. Since then, she has released four more albums. She is also an accomplished star of the big and small screen, and has had featured roles in several films and television shows. Her most notable film role was The House Bunny in 2008. She starred on the television series Scorpion and on the musical shows Smash and Country Comfort. An accomplished live performer, Katharine has impressed theatre fans as well. In 2018, she made her Broadway debut in Waitress, for which she received rave reviews from both critics and fans. In fact, her voice is so recognizable for its beauty and clarity that the panel and audience identified her almost immediately on The Masked Singer, and fans were sure the bubbly and talented singing and dancing pink ice cream of Banana Split was Katharine.

In an interview with ET after their elimination from the Group B Finals, David sang his wife’s praises, saying he “was so proud of Kat” and calling her a “triple threat” who sings, dances and acts. He raved that Katharine “can do any genre of music and do it really well. So the sky was the limit.” She proved this during the show when she sang everything from a moving rendition of Pink’s “A Million Dreams” for their first song to a Broadway-style performance of “Singin’ in the Rain” in the finals, during which she was the first contestant in the history of the show to tap dance during a routine. Even though they placed second to Queen of Hearts, Katharine made her mark on the show and set the bar very high for future performers.

Katharine returned the love to David, and it is clear that she thinks her husband is the top banana. She said, “David was behind the scenes… putting his magic on all the arrangements.” David played instruments from piano to drums during their routines, accompanying Katharine on songs such as the standard “Cry Me a River,” “Let ‘Er Rip” by The Chicks, and “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga. These performances were full-on production numbers, featuring scenery, props and Broadway-caliber singing and dancing. Katharine and David brought down the house in their final number, “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing” by Stevie Wonder, a duet with panelist Robin Thicke. Despite taking second place, Banana Split set a new standard for excellence on the show that others will aspire to for many seasons to come.
