An adorable piece of crossover fan art turns several beloved Mass Effect characters into Animal Crossing villagers. Both the sci-fi space epic and Nintendo’s wholesome life sim put an emphasis on memorable companions and player choice. While Mass Effect 4 has been teased by developer BioWare, Animal Crossing: New Horizons just received its final piece of post-launch content on Nintendo Switch.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ free 2.0 update recently added a ton of content to the island-themed game, including permanent shops for the game’s wandering vendors and NPCs. Players can also visit Kapp’n to explore remote islands which may contain valuable items, and Brewster’s café and new decoration options help to further flesh out players’ islands. Meanwhile, Mass Effect Legendary Edition remastered the famous sci-fi game trilogy for PC and last-gen consoles this year, adding a number of quality-of-life improvements and new features in the process. While each title’s graphics and performance were upgraded, Mass Effect’s cast of characters and their stories remain unchanged.

Bringing the two popular franchises together, Reddit user odangowitch shared their cute fan art combining Mass Effect characters and Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ art style. The artwork turns the Mass Effect franchise’s most prominent and popular squadmates into villagers who would fit right in next to Animal Crossing staples like Tom Nook or Isabelle. Biotic warrior Kaiden Alenko becomes a cute dog and retains his memorable haircut, while calibration master Garrus Vakarian is interpreted as a large bird. Alliance soldier Ashley Williams becomes a squirrel, while the Krogan juggernaut Urdnot Wrex is a very angry frog. Rounding out the crossover cast is Tali’Zorah as an adorable purple octopus and Liara T’Soni as rather alien-looking deer.

Like Animal Crossing, the Mass Effect franchise is built on player choice and connecting to a community of lovable NPCs. BioWare’s epic sci-fi series is perhaps best-known for its save file transfer system, allowing choices made in each game to have consequences echo throughout the entire original trilogy. While Mass Effect 3’s ending delivered a definitive and infamously divisive close to the original story, 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda aimed for a fresh start in the series universe by leaving the Milky Way Galaxy behind. However, BioWare has been teasing Mass Effect 4 for a year, suggesting the franchise’s next installment may continue the original trilogy’s story rather than following Andromeda’s.

While they may look totally different at first glance, the Mass Effect and Animal Crossing game franchises have a few things in common. Fans have grown very attached to each cast of colorful inhuman companions, and both give players the ability to choose how they want to experience the unique fictional worlds. In that way, odangowitch’s fan art is a worthy tribute to both franchises by reinterpreting key Mass Effect characters in the context of Animal Crossing’s cutesy world. While Animal Crossing: New Horizons has just received its last piece of content, it seems likely it will eventually receive a sequel like Mass Effect 4 looks to follow up BioWare’s original trilogy.
