Mass Effect Legendary Edition Photo Mode Confirmed By Project Director

The project director for Mass Effect Legendary Edition has confirmed that the game will include a Photo Mode. This means players can take memorable in-game photos of their journey across the galaxy when the remastered sci-fi trilogy launches next month.

From Horizon Zero Dawn to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Photo Mode has become a staple in open-world action RPGs as of late, but the trend began after the original Mass Effect trilogy concluded in 2012 with Mass Effect 3. None of the original three games (nor 2017’s Mass Effect: Andromeda, for that matter) include a native Photo Mode. Mass Effect Legendary Edition addresses this problem, and the additional feature is just one of many justifications for BioWare to revisit and rerelease its acclaimed trilogy.

Mac Walters, the project director for Mass Effect Legendary Edition, shared the news that the game would have a native Photo Mode in response to an inquisitive fan on Twitter. In his tweet, Walters includes a stunning, stylized screenshot of Commander Shepard’s Turian companion, Garrus, confidently strolling across a field of grass in front of the Mako. The image, along with Walters’ tweet, can be seen below:

Many features of Mass Effect’s new Photo Mode are visible in the screenshot – apparently taken with an Xbox controller connected. The triggers allow players to pan the camera up and down, while the B button hides the UI. If one looks more closely, there is a Free option in the Camera Mode category that indicates a Free Cam. Furthermore, Mass Effect Legendary Edition players will be able to tilt the camera and change the focal length to their choosing. There also appears to be a number of effects and editing options, which makes sense given that the photo of Mass Effect’s Garrus is in black and white. The diversity of features in the Photo Mode should certainly entice aspiring photographers as they scour the galaxy’s vast array of gorgeous landscapes once again.

Although it’s somewhat expected that a Mass Effect trilogy remaster would include a Photo Mode at this point, it’s still a welcome surprise considering its notable absence from the ME series up to now. For the first time, players will be able to natively capture and save their experiences across one the greatest sagas in gaming. Beyond that ability, artistically-minded players will be able to explore the effect options and transform a simple screenshot into a stylized piece of art. Photo Mode is a wonderful outlet for creation and a welcome addition to Mass Effect. Players can begin experimenting with the feature once Mass Effect Legendary Edition launches on May 14.
