After months of leaks and rumors, Bioware has confirmed that Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be a remastered version of the original trilogy for modern systems. The Mass Effect trilogy is a series of highly-acclaimed sci-fi RPGs from the PS3/Xbox 360 era, set around an interstellar invasion from a technologically advanced race called the Reapers.

There have been a number of leaks regarding a remastered version of the original trilogy for the current crop of consoles, as well as enhanced versions for the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. The rumors have claimed the remastered Mass Effect trilogy would skip the Nintendo Switch, but would come to all other major platforms. There have also been rumors that the game was planned to be released in October, but issues porting the original Mass Effect led to delays.

Bioware and EA are celebrating N7 Day with an announcement for Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One in Spring 2021, with enhanced versions coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X in the future. The game was announced via a trailer on the official Mass Effect Twitter page. According to a post on the official EA website, Mass Effect Legendary Edition will include all of the single-player base content and all of the DLC from the Mass Effect trilogy, with visuals remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD. The multiplayer content from Mass Effect 3 appears to be cut.

There doesn’t appear to be any brand new content in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, so fans shouldn’t hope for changes to the controversial ending of Mass Effect 3. The post does mention that a new Mass Effect is in development, but it’s unclear whether it’s a direct sequel to the story of Commander Shepard or another spin-off, like Mass Effect: Andromeda. This new project is in the early stages of development, so fans shouldn’t expect any more news for a while.

The Mass Effect trilogy consists of some of the finest games of their era, and it’s exciting to learn they’re being enhanced for modern systems. The people who missed out on the trilogy the first time around will soon have the chance to experience Commander Shepard’s journey in full, with performance and visuals improved to match modern titles.
