Masters of the Universe Revelation Can Fix HeMans Biggest Skeletor Problem

Masters of the Universe: Revelation can fix the franchise’s biggest problem with Skeletor by going in a much darker direction than past He-Man shows. In the world of Masters of the Universe, Skeletor is the leader of the Evil Warriors and the main antagonist. As the greatest threat to Eternia and Castle Grayskull, Skeletor is the archnemesis to the hero of the story, He-Man. Skeletor’s primary goal is to unlock the secrets of the mysterious Castle Grayskull and use them to conquer Eternia.

Voiced by Mark Hamill, Skeletor will return to the small screen in the near future in the upcoming animated miniseries, Masters of the Universe: Revelation. The new series is the fourth cartoon based on Mattel’s Masters of the Universe toyline. Revelation, which is being produced as a Netflix original, will pick up where the 1983 cartoon left off, but will shift the focus from He-Man to Teela. As the show isn’t being heavily impacted by the coronavirus delays, it’s currently on track to hit Netflix sometime in 2021. A trailer has yet to be released.

Not too much is known about what Masters of the Universe: Revelation will bring to the popular fantasy franchise. It’ll keep the original Masters of the Universe designs, but may make other changes. There’s a strong possibility that it can fix a problem with Skeletor that has been present in every cartoon so far. Skeletor, despite being the main villain, evolved into a comedic presence on the original show. Since the show was always meant for children, his numerous defeats at the hands of He-Man were both laughable and expected. Regardless of repeated failures, the iconic villain never gave up, and was always able to come up with another scheme to take down He-Man and steal the secrets of Castle Grayskull. But each time, Skeletor was predictably beaten.

Making Skeletor fit the show’s kid-friendly tone kept him from being taken seriously as a villain, but Masters of the Universe: Revelation won’t be held back by the same problem. In comparing the show to HBO’s Game of Thrones, showrunner Kevin Smith has described Revelation as a “grown-up story”. What this means is that Revelation can go places with the characters that past cartoons couldn’t, and no character is need of a darker direction than Skeletor himself.

The series can finally portray Skeletor as the Overlord of Evil that he thinks himself to be. While the show may not be quite on the level of Game of Thrones when it comes to adult material, just a PG-13 tone could be enough to fully capture the wickedness and brutality of Skeletor. If Revelation goes down this path, it can turn Skeleton into a truly menacing villain. Furthermore, having less restrictions on violence will make it possible for Masters of the Universe: Revelation to provide a proper end to the fight between He-Man and Skeletor (which has already been teased by Smith). In the show, Skeletor can finally be killed by He-Man.
