Masters Of The Universe Why The Castle Grayskull Rules Dont Apply To Teela

In Masters of the Universe: Revelations, the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull cannot leave the castle in human form—that is, until Teela becomes the new Sorceress. Voiced by Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar, Teela is able to defy this rule and use the power of Grayskull freely, because the source of her strength and her duties as the Sorceress are markedly different from those of her predecessor.

A Netflix exclusive animated series, Masters of the Universe: Revelations begins its tale with the Captain of the Royal Guards, Teela, coming to the startling realization that her best friend Prince Adam and the legendary hero He-Man are one and the same. Not only does she have to confront feelings of loss when this secret is revealed after Adam (Chris Wood) nobly sacrifices his life to save Eternia, but she also bears feelings of hurt over not being trusted to keep this secret. Years pass after this revelation, only for Teela to initiate her own journey of self-discovery with old and new allies alike to save Eternia once again.

As Teela is preparing to enter the tide of transformation to save the universe, the Sorceress explains that Teela must sacrifice her own life to protect the power of Grayskull. In order for Teela to embrace her destiny, she would have to give up her dreams, her freedom, and her bonds with loved ones. However, instead of severing her relationships with the people she treasures, Teela concludes that her attachments to them give her a greater strength than the power of Grayskull ever could. With this newfound resolve, Teela chooses to go above and beyond protecting the power—choosing to use the power to protect her home and the people in it. This very decision is what grants her the ability to use the power of Grayskull outside of the castle. Since the Sorceress’ duty solely involved protecting the power, being tethered to the castle was the best way to fulfill this mission. Teela’s duties as a sorceress include protecting her loved ones, which is best fulfilled by standing at their side.

Though Teela is officially the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull at Masters of the Universe: Revelations’ end, her new role is more similar to that of Prince Adam’s than the position of the original Sorceress—revealed to be Teela’s mother. Whenever Prince Adam chants his signature catchphrase, “By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!” he transforms into the tall and muscular He-Man. With the help of his trusty Power Sword, he uses his power to protect both the secrets of Castle Grayskull and the residents of Eternia. Teela does the same, minus the snazzy catchphrase. She uses her recently acquired power to protect it and Eternia’s citizens without any restraints. In contrast to the Sorceress who was bound to Castle Grayskull, Teela is able to fulfill her duties of protection anywhere, like He-Man.

Before the events of the Masters of the Universe: Revelations series, Teela was a strong warrior who took pride in protecting others. After, Teela is still a strong warrior who takes pride in protecting others. The only difference between the past and present Teela is how she goes about doing so. With no more secrets between her and her loved ones, Teela is able to live up to her full potential.
