MateBook E Is Huaweis Answer To The Microsoft Surface Pro 8

Huawei has announced a new 2-in-1 Windows-powered notebook that is set to rival Microsoft’s own Surface Pro 8. The MateBook E 2022 boasts high-end features such as an OLED display, an 11th Gen Intel processor, and Thunderbolt 4. It also runs Windows 11 out of the box.

While Huawei’s mobile phone division struggles due to the U.S. ban, its computer arm is growing. In the past year, it has launched its first desktop computer, first laser desktop printer, multiple monitors, and new models of its MateBook line of laptops.

The Huawei MateBook E is a detachable 2-in-1 Windows laptop that is available only in China, for now, Since Huawei sells its MateBook line of computers outside its home country, there is a possibility the new laptop will be available in other markets. The device runs the latest version of Windows (Windows 11 Home Edition) out of the box, uses the same 2nd generation M-Pencil stylus as its Mate 40 flagship phones and 2021 MatePad model, and has a magnetic keyboard. It also works seamlessly with other Huawei products.

The Huawei MateBook E, which comes in Interstellar Blue and Nebula Ash, has a 12.6-inch 2560 x 1600 OLED display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and a maximum brightness of 600 nits. There are three configurations available: a base model with an Intel Core i5-1130G7 processor with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD storage; a mid-model with the same Core i5 chip but 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD; and a top-end model with an Intel Core i7-1160G7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD. Both models have an Intel Iris X integrated graphics card. Owners will also find an 8MP camera in front and a 13MP camera with an LED flash on the back. There are only two ports on this device. One is a single USB-C port with Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort support and also for charging the notebook’s 42Wh battery. The other port is a 3.5mm microphone and headphone combo jack. The MateBook E has WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, quad microphones and speakers, and support for 65W fast charging.

Huawei hasn’t disclosed when it will bring the MateBook E to global markets but it already has the Windows notebook available for purchase in China. The starting price converts to about $940 for the base model, $1095 for the middle configuration, and $1252 for the highest configuration. The Surface Pro 8 starts at $1099 and that gets you the model with a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. That price doesn’t include the detachable keyboard and the Surface Slim Pen 2 which cost $139.99 and $129.99 respectively. Huawei ships the MateBook E with a keyboard regardless of the configuration, but only the highest configuration comes with the M-Pencil 2 stylus in the box.
