Mats Dagger Story Isnt Over Wheel Of Time Sets Up Its Missing Villain

The Wheel of Time episode 6 didn’t end Mat Cauthon’s dagger story – it actually just set up the return of a missing villain. What Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) did to Mat (Barney Harris) may have left the impression that Mat’s troubles are over, but if the books are any indication, there’s still much for the show to do with Mat and the ruby-hilted dagger. If the series follows the story of Jordan’s books, what comes next should involve a previously introduced villain from the series premiere.

For a while now, there’s been a concern amongst the characters that Mat might be the Dragon Reborn. Rand (Josha Stradowksi) and Thom (Alexandre Willaume) came to the conclusion that Mat may have the ability to channel the One Power when he began to behave strangely. The events of Wheel of Time episode 6 confirmed that what’s really plaguing Mat is the dagger he stole from Shadar Logoth, not the madness tied to the male half of the One Power. Thanks to Moiraine’s timely intervention, the evil taint from the dagger was purged from his body. After that, Mat seemingly recovered, but the glare he gave the group and his surprising decision not to enter the Ways suggested that Mat hasn’t returned to normal yet.

Mat deciding to stay behind in Wheel of Time episode 6’s ending wasn’t the only sign that there are still loose ends to tie up with his ruby-hilted dagger story. In the books, Mat wasn’t saved from the dagger’s taint so easily. That scene with Moiraine did happen in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time books, but it’s important to note that she couldn’t Heal him completely. She told the group that he had to be Healed by a gathering of Aes Sedai at the White Tower. But until then, he couldn’t be separated from the dagger. The problem though, is that a character named Padan Fain stole the dagger and prevented the Healing from happening right away. Fain already made an appearance in Wheel of Time’s first episode and may return in one of season 1’s remaining two episodes to fill his role from the book.

Played by Johann Myers, Fain was the peddler who visited Two Rivers at the time of the Fade and the Trollocs’ attack on the village. In the books, Fain was the treacherous Darkfriend responsible for leading the Trolloc army to the Two Rivers. While the show has barely utilized his character, he was implied to have the same purpose in Amazon’s Wheel of Time when he was shown slinking away in the midst of the slaughter.

Fain hasn’t interfered in the lives of the main characters since that night, but Wheel of Time just laid the groundwork for him to come back into the picture in a big way. Not unlike his book counterpart, Fain could stretch out Mat’s dagger story by stealing the dagger and setting off with it. In the books, this resulted in an adventure for Rand, Mat, Perrin, and Loial, who had to go on a quest to hunt down Fain and retrieve the dagger. It was up to them and a few of the Aes Sedai to make sure that Mat could be saved. This could very well be a storyline for The Wheel of Time season 2 to explore.
