Peacock releases a MacGruber song performed by Maya Rudolph recapping the story of the Saturday Night Live character ahead of his solo show. Will Forte returns to lead the cast of the upcoming streaming series in the titular role alongside Ryan Phillippe and Kristen Wiig and series newcomers Sam Elliott as MacGruber’s dad, Laurence Fishburne and Billy Zane. MacGruber will see the government elect to release America’s ultimate hero from rotting in prison for over a decade in order to take down the mysterious Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth from his past.
The character, a clever parody of the iconic action-adventure series MacGyver, was created by Forte alongside SNL vets Jorma Taccone and John Solomon. He would later make his way to the big screen in 2010, where MacGruber would receive mixed reviews from critics and audiences and only grossed $9.8 million against its $10 million budget. However, thanks to a growing cult following over the years, development on a sequel has slowly made progress, first as a film that would be crowdfunded before eyeing a series with Peacock acquiring the rights in early 2020.
With just a few days remaining until its premiere, Peacock has debuted a Maya Rudolph MacGruber song. The music video offers a recap of the SNL character and his 2010 movie ahead of his upcoming solo show. Check out the hilarious song below:

The MacGruber recap song serves as a perfect way to catch audiences up on the SNL character ahead of his solo show. Not only does the music video offer insight into the character’s backstory and his reason for being sent to prison for the past 10 years, but it also properly establishes his relationships with Ryan Phillippe’s reluctant cohort Dixon Piper and Kristen Wiig’s lover Vickie St. Elmo. The music video also confirms the show is taking advantage of its streaming home and sticking with the R-rated humor of the 2010 MacGruber movie.
It also may not come as much of a surprise the creatives behind MacGruber took to utilizing a song to recap the character ahead of the solo show. Taccone is well-known as being one-third of the sketch comedy troupe The Lonely Island along with Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer, who have released five albums together, much of which was debuted via Saturday Night Live, and has carried over to their film careers with fellow cult classic movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. The wait for MacGruber’s return is nearly over as the series is set to begin streaming on Peacock on December 16.
