Maylene Fight How To Find & Beat Pokémon BDSPs 3rd Gym Leader

Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl welcome back the eight gym leaders of the Sinnoh Region, challenging players to test their skills and earn badges as they train to be the very best. Like most Pokémon main-series games, badges are an essential part of progressing through the game as players unlock new skills, areas, and items with each gym leader they defeat. Only trainers who have proven themselves by earning all eight badges can challenge the game’s Elite 4 and regional Champion to claim the title for themselves.

Maylene is the leader of the Veilstone Gym, the third gym in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Her speciality is Fighting-type Pokémon, and while she herself is a fighter, her attitude towards battling is surprisingly laid-back when players meet her in the gym. Fighting types are weak to Flying and Fairy-type moves, so players with a Prinplup will have a slight advantage in this gym since it can learn Peck at level 15.

To challenge Maylene, players must solve a sliding puzzle to move the screens blocking the path. There are several Black Belt trainers with different Fighting-types like Machoke and Meditite throughout the gym, but players can walk around them if they want to skip straight to Maylene. The trainers who were defeated won’t have to be beaten again if players leave the gym, but the puzzle will reset each time.

How To Beat Maylene In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Maylene’s Fighting-type Pokémon are weak to Flying, Psychic, and Fairy-type Pokémon. However, Fighting-type Pokémon are strong against Normal, Dark, Ice, and Steel-type Pokémon. Players who have been training Normal/Flying types like Staravia should be mindful that her hits will pack a punch with the type weakness, but their Flying-type moves will easily take out her first two Pokémon.

Maylene has three Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: a Meditite, a Machoke, and a Lucario. While trainers will have already encountered Meditite and Machoke, Maylene’s Lucario is rare and will likely be the player’s first encounter with this Pokémon in the game. This is the same party that Maylene used in the original Gen IV games, but their movesets and levels have been updated for the remakes.

Meditite / Psychic & Fighting / Level 27

Machoke / Fighting / Level 27

Lucario / Fighting & Steel / Level 30

While Meditite and Machoke are both weak to Flying and Fairy-type moves, Lucario poses a unique challenge with its dual Fighting and Steel types. Lucario is resistant to Normal, Grass, Rock, Bug, Ice, Steel, Dark, and Dragon-type moves, and its high speed and attack stats allow it to dish out a lot of damage. However, Lucario is weak to Fighting, Ground, and Fire-types, so players with these types of Pokémon trained up should be able to take it down. Additionally, Pokémon with the Intimidate ability will lower Lucario’s attack stat when they enter battle, so a Staravia, Luxio, or Luxray with this ability can switch in to counter it. Luxray can also learn Volt Switch at level 33, and this move can be used to repeatedly switch Luxray in and out of battle to lower Lucario’s attack and keep their party rotating to spread its damage without their Pokémon being knocked out.
