In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are one of the most well-known and featured couples. From the first Iron Man movie, which launched the entire MCU, this relationship begins to form. And, throughout the following movies featuring Iron Man, the relationship has many ups and downs.
While many people consider them to be one of the best couples in the franchise and are very attached to them, there are others who don’t like them as much. There are some reasons why it’s easy to see them as soul mates as well as reasons why they didn’t work well together at all.
10 Awful: When Tony didn’t even know she was allergic to strawberries
While Tony sometimes tries really hard to make things up to Pepper when he screws up, he doesn’t always do a very good job. In Iron Man 2, he goes to her office trying to make things right by bringing a gift of strawberries. However, he doesn’t know that she’s allergic to them. This is troubling because it shows that despite how many years they’ve known one another, he doesn’t even know what she’s allergic to, too.
9 Soulmates: Pepper was there for Tony through many traumatic things
Having Tony Stark as a romantic partner wouldn’t be an easy thing to deal with. Tony’s personal demons and issues combined with the fact he’s a superhero make their relationship hard to handle.
However, despite this, Pepper is there for Tony after many difficult times such as when he’s suffering from PTSD.
8 Awful: Because Tony spent many years being disrespectful toward women
While the MCU tries to present this couple is really romantic and one that fans should root for, it’s hard to take this seriously given Tony’s track record. While he grows from being just a playboy and womanizer, he did treat women pretty poorly in the past.
While the franchise works with the trope that a good woman can help a playboy fall in love for good, this is a pretty harmful and sexist trope that feels outdated.
7 Soulmates: Because Pepper was one of the few people that actually knew Tony well
Tony Stark is definitely flawed, but he also has more complexities than most people realize. This is because not that many people know the real Tony very well, and he doesn’t let people get close enough to see him.
However, because Pepper knew Tony for so long, she knew him better than practically anyone.
6 Awful: Because Tony was Pepper’s boss
One of the most troubling things about their relationship dynamic is that Tony starts out as her boss.
He also is a pretty difficult boss who expects her to be working basically all the time. While this power imbalance does change as they start to date more seriously, the earlier dynamics between the two of them were a bit off.
5 Soulmates: They bickered but it wasn’t in a malicious way
Tony and Pepper don’t always get along perfectly, but this is part of why they work well together. Pepper doesn’t just let Tony rule the roost and will push back when he is being reckless or self-sabotaging.
So, while they do bicker often, the reasons for this are usually good-hearted, and it’s also good for Tony to have a partner who doesn’t let him always follow his worst inclinations.
4 Awful: Pepper expected Tony to stop being a superhero
Just as with many superheroes stories, the female love interest is the one who wants the male superhero to stop.
This is another trope that feels a little outdated. While it’s understandable that Pepper would worry about Tony and his safety, if she really knew him, she would know that he couldn’t just sit idly by when he had the ability to help people.
3 Soulmates: Pepper was one of the only people that Tony really cared about
Part of Tony’s character arc in the MCU is to go from a very selfish character who doesn’t care about others to a person who saves other people and lets people into his life. However, for a very long time, and at the beginning of this journey, Pepper is one of only two people who Tony is even somewhat close to.
This goes to show just how much he trusts her.
2 Awful: Because being close to Tony put Pepper’s life in danger
Pepper is a capable and smart woman who takes over as the CEO of Stark Industries and does a great job of it. So, she’s not helpless, but she also isn’t a hero. By being close to Tony, she becomes a target as villains use her to get to Tony.
This makes it hard for their relationship to ever feel secure and safe, even if Tony is just trying to do the right thing.
1 Soulmates: When they were both very committed parents
As these two get older and their relationship develops, Tony’s bad habits start to lessen. He becomes a better partner, and, after the snap, these two seem to become more devoted to one another than ever.
Then, once Morgan is born, these two both are equally committed as parents and seem like actual partners for the first time in their relationship.
