With Thanos gone, the MCU needs a new Big Bad. Rumor is that it will be Kang the Conqueror. Should he be the top dog? Or is there a better villain?

It was recently announced that Jonathan Majors, the star of Lovecraft Country and The Last Black Man in San Francisco, has been cast in the MCU’s third Ant-Man movie. His role is rumored to be that of Kang the Conqueror, one of the most iconic villains in the Marvel Comics universe. If this is true, then Kang could be the franchise’s next Big Bad following Thanos’ reign.

In many ways, Kang will make a worthy successor to the Mad Titan. He’s just as popular and complexly drawn, but he’s a completely different character. There are also a few alternatives who would make worthy successors, too.

Kang has a number of different identities — Rama-Tut, Iron Lad, Immortus — because he’s done so much time-traveling that he’s split his being across a bunch of different timelines.

In Avengers: Endgame, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes ripped a bunch of holes in the spacetime continuum, effectively creating the multiverse, which will be explored in WandaVision, Loki, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This has set the stage perfectly for Kang’s introduction.

After the Avengers took on the mighty Thanos, the next most powerful villain is Galactus, the devourer of worlds. Nick Fury seems to be setting up S.W.O.R.D. with the Skrulls to give Earth the suit of armor that Tony Stark always wanted to build for it.

They’ll be able to spot Galactus if he ever decides to wander through space to find Earth and eat it for lunch, then get a new Avengers team together to fight him off when he shows up.

As a history scholar from the distant future, Kang is obsessed with the past. In particular, he’s interested in the “Age of Heroes,” when all Marvel’s most iconic superheroes existed.

Thematically, this can let the MCU get meta and reflect on its own history as it moves into its next chapter.

7 Alternative: Adam Warlock

In terms of power, the only Marvel character who can rival Captain Marvel and Thanos is Adam Warlock. His MCU introduction was already teased in one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s many credits scenes when Ayesha created an artificial being to destroy the Guardians and named it “Adam.”

There’s every chance that the Guardians will face Adam in Vol. 3 and either defeat him or get him to join the team. But he might be too strong for them and necessitate the intervention of the remaining Avengers.

He’s only a movie or two away from assembling the Sinister Six to crush Spidey, which could just be the first step of a megalomaniacal plan. Osborn has the wealth and resources to take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

4 Kang Is Worthy: He’s From The Distant Future

In the Marvel universe’s timeline, society has become a utopia by the 31st century. In this time, Kang is a scholar who’s fascinated with history and starts exploring it when he stumbles upon Doctor Doom’s time machine.

This utopian distant future will be interesting to explore in the MCU. Thanos allowed the movies to explore the cosmic side of things, but Kang will allow them to go a thousand years into the future.

3 Alternative: The Mandarin

The MCU’s first attempt at bringing the fearsome Mandarin to the screen was a complete disaster. Tony Stark finally faced his arch-nemesis in Iron Man 3 and he turned out to be a beer-swilling, soccer-obsessed actor named Trevor Slattery. This was a huge disappointment to the Marvel fanbase.

Luckily, Marvel is fixing this mistake with the upcoming Shang-Chi movie, in which the great Tony Leung will play the real Mandarin. The Mandarin and his shady terrorist organization, the Ten Rings, could dominate the MCU throughout Phase Four.

2 Kang Is Worthy: He’s One Of The Avengers’ Most Prominent Villains

Next to Baron Zemo and Ultron, Kang is one of the Avengers’ most prominent villains in the comics. Thanos was famed for the Infinity Stones storyline – called the Infinity Gems in the comics — but he didn’t have a long, storied history of butting heads with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

By contrast, Kang has been clashing with Marvel’s roster of superheroes since the 1960s. There’s a ton of story material for the MCU to draw from.

1 Alternative: Doctor Doom

The Fantastic Four’s iconic foe Doctor Doom has been botched by two film adaptations so far. Julian McMahon’s version in the Tim Story movies didn’t feel like a threat at all, while the studio turned Toby Kebbell’s version in the Josh Trank movie into a ridiculous CGI crash test dummy.

The most compelling thing about Doom is that he’s a political leader from Latveria, so he has diplomatic immunity; there’s nothing the law can do to stop him. The previous movies did nothing with this, but the MCU can use it to terrific effect.
