MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

When fans are talking about Marvel television shows, one that is often overlooked and underappreciated is Marvel’s Agent Carter. ABC tried to take off when it came to Marvel properties after Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was a success, but Inhumans was critically derided and Agent Carter only lasted two seasons.

Based on the character of Peggy Carter, the love interest of Captain America in his first movie, Marvel’s Agent Carter showed how a strong-willed woman forced her way into a male-dominant law enforcement agency and ended up as one of the founding leaders of S.H.I.E.L.D. Along the way, the show introduced some great characters that helped the show remain a critical darling.

10 Jack Thompson

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

It took a long time for fans to warm up to Jack Thompson. Much like everyone else in the agency, he didn’t think that Peggy Carter deserved to fight alongside them since she was a woman. He joined his chief, Roger Dooley, in pushing Peggy into menial tasks rather than actual investigative work.

However, while Dooley died in the middle of the first season, Jack stuck around and little by little, he realized how important Peggy was to the agency. By the end, he was working side-by-side with her until his fateful end, and since there wasn’t a third season of Agent Carter, his fate was never sealed.

9 Angie Martinelli

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

Angie Martinelli was only in the first season of Agent Carter, but she was a very important person in Peggy’s life. Angie worked as a waitress at a restaurant that Peggy often ate at and the two became close friends. At the same time, Angie wanted to be an actress.

This all led to Angie getting involved with helping Peggy, which put her in the crosshairs of the evil Dottie Underwood. However, what really made Angie stand out as a character was that she was there to help ground Peggy, a real friend in a world where everyone else had an agenda. It was nice to have a real person for the audience to identify with.

8 Daniel Sousa

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

When Agent Carter showed up at her job in the government intelligence agency, there were few people there who thought she could do the job as a woman. However, there was one person who had Agent Carter’s back and that was Daniel Sousa. What made him so great was his honor and nobility, greater than most of his fellow agents.

There were some problems with him, especially when he thought Peggy was a traitor to her country, but he came around and became a true hero. He was a key agent in the rise of S.H.I.E.L.D., and his portrayal on Agent Carter showed why he was a perfect choice.

7 Johann Fennhoff

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

In the comics, Johann Fennhoff was known as Doctor Faustus. He had a superpower that allowed him to hypnotize just about anyone, and he did it regularly on Agent Carter. Played by Ralph Brown Long, he was also a very charismatic and entertaining character, making his power even scarier.

There was also a moment at the end that showed up played a bigger role in the MCU because he was the man who helped program The Winter Soldier. As for Agent Carter, he was a solid villain who was both dangerous and fun to watch.

6 Whitney Frost

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

Whitney Frost was the villain in the second season of Agent Carter, and much like Dottie Underwood in season 1, she was someone who pretended to be something she wasn’t to keep her true intentions a secret. Frost was experimenting with Zero Matter.

The character was similar to Dottie, and that really kept her from being a better character that the season 1 villain because of those similarities. Frost was raised as a smart girl who was taught to hide her intelligence. This at least made her more nuanced, as she was held down in much the same way as Agent Carter, although she responded to it in the worst way possible.

5 Jason Wilkes

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

Jason Wilkes showed up in the second season as part of the Zero Matter storyline. He was basically a scientist whose exposure to the Zero Matter made him intangible. He was sympathetic and helped Agent Carter because he was a good guy, and because he wanted to cure himself.

When Whitney Frost captured and experimented on him, it made her villain even more despicable. Wilkes was someone whose pure goodness made viewers want to see him survive and helped to increase the tension as Agent Carter was closing in on her enemy.

4 Dottie Underwood

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

Every great hero needs a great adversary and Dottie Underwood presented a fantastic villain in this series. Dottie started off as a friend to Peggy Carter, but it didn’t take long to learn that she was a Russian assassin who was trained in no less than the same Red Room as Black Widow.

What made the character so great was her ability to switch back and forth, from the deadly assassin to the seemingly clueless farmgirl that she portrayed. She ended up as one of the show’s best villains, by far.

3 Howard Stark

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

Howard Stark popped up here and there in the MCU, having a big role in Captain America: The First Avenger and smaller roles in flashbacks in the Iron Man movies. However, it was his time in Agent Carter that allowed him to shine.

Dominic Cooper was able to show exactly where Tony Stark got his arrogance and dominating presence. His playboy presence and chemistry with Haley Atwell electrified every scene they shared and this was easily his best appearance in any MCU series or movie.

2 Edwin Jarvis

MCU Agent Carter’s 10 Best Characters

While Howard Stark was a highly entertaining character in Agent Carter, Edwin Jarvis was the better character for this story. Howard was always flirty and was just as ambitious as Peggy, but Jarvis was her friend and someone who helped push her in the right direction.

Jarvis worked for Stark and he was who Tony Stark eventually named his AI after. In Agent Carter, Jarvis proved week in and week out why he was so important in everyone’s lives and his charm and comic timing when delivering lines made him one of the best parts of the series.

1 Peggy Carter

The best character on the show was the lead character, Agent Peggy Carter. This entire series was about her becoming the hero that she needed to be in order to help S.H.I.E.L.D. rise to the top of the world’s security agencies. She did it in an era where few men took a woman seriously, and by the end, she proved she was the best of them all.

Peggy Carter did this with no superpowers and no gadgets that allowed her to operate as a hero. She did this while all the forces above her tried to hold her down. Thanks to her tireless efforts to make it, Agent Carter was one of the most inspirational characters in the MCU.
