MCU Explains How Loki Couldve Survived Infinity War

WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for Loki episode 5.

Despite Thanos clearly killing the God of Mischief in Avengers: Infinity War, the Marvel Cinematic Universe revealed how he could’ve survived in Loki. In Loki episode 5, Sophia Di Martino’s Lady Loki discovers Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was sent to a void at the end of time. Lady Loki believes the villain controlling the Time Variance Authority is secretly beyond the Void, so she prunes herself and reunites with Loki. In the Void, the pair discover that a time monster called Alioth may be hiding the charlatan pulling the strings at the TVA, and Lady Loki thinks she can enchant the monster and control it.

In the Void, Loki and Lady Loki meet a variety of Loki variants. These include Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant) and Kid Loki (Jack Veal). Oddly, there’s even an Alligator Loki. According to Hiddleston’s character, “It’s best not to question it.” Apparently, Loki variants are survivors, and somehow they keep avoiding the cloud-like Alioth, who consumes any energy and matter pruned by the TVA. With all the Loki variants inhabiting the Void, Owen Wilson’s Mobius jokes, “You throw a rock out here, you hit a Loki.”

Reinforcing the idea that Loki variants survive, Loki episode 5 explains how the God of Mischief could’ve made it past Thanos. In Infinity War, Thanos kills Hiddleston’s Loki when the God of Mischief tries to stab him. Though Loki’s death is part of the TVA’s Sacred Timeline, Classic Loki reveals there was a way to escape that fate. According to Classic Loki, he conjured a replica of himself so lifelike that Thanos bought it. Then, he hid by shape-shifting into inanimate debris. After faking his death, Grant’s Classic Loki drifted in space and wound up on a remote planet. He stayed there in isolation and simply lived his life. The TVA didn’t arrest him until he tried to leave the planet and get back to his brother, Thor.

With the explanation, Marvel finally confirms that Loki could’ve survived the Mad Titan. Yes, Loki’s death was a noble end for the God of Mischief, completing his character arc from villain to self-sacrificing antihero. But Loki escaped death multiple times in the MCU. If anything, his demise early in Infinity War was anticlimactic. It didn’t make sense for Thanos to defeat the God of Mischief so easily. Now, the MCU is addressing that peculiarity. It turns out Loki had a real chance to survive Thanos, and it’s possible that he did.

Though Classic Loki made it past the Mad Titan, it’s less likely that Hiddleston’s Loki did. In the Loki premiere, the God of Mischief sees images of his entire timeline at the TVA, and the film ends shortly after Thanos kills him. If he had lived, the timeline would’ve likely continued on. Hiddleston’s Loki doesn’t seem to consider the possibility of survival until Classic Loki suggests it. There’s always a chance that Classic Loki is secretly the Loki that supposedly died in Infinity War, but his unique costume makes that more of a stretch. It’s not likely that Hiddleston’s character made it past Avengers: Infinity War, but fans should still be on the lookout for any mischievous-looking inanimate debris.
