MCU Henchmen The 10 Best Costume Designs

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is home to some truly sinister villains. But no fierce foe can get the job done without an army of henchmen to do their bidding. Whether they are super-powered or carry with them elite training, they are responsible for carrying out the command of the main antagonist.

There’s a huge variety of henchmen in the MCU and some of them are incredibly famous. When it comes to their costumes though there are a lot of interesting designs; some of them are practical or used to instill fear, others link back to the villains they serve. Some of these suits are especially memorable and may have even turned up in multiple MCU projects.

10 Dark Sorcerers

Mads Mikkelsen put in a brilliant performance as the dark sorcerer Kaecilius and he had a number of dedicated Zealots alongside him who were willing to give their lives in battle. Their costumes were largely based on that of the traditional sorcerer’s garbs.

With Kaecilius sporting a yellow version and his followers red, they stood out against the greens and blues of warriors like Doctor Strange and Mordo. Their costumes, created by Alexandra Byrne, were practical and featured some great design work; it gave the sense that they were genuine modern, magical warriors.

9 The Hand

The Hand were increasingly dangerous threats that Daredevil and later the Defenders had to overcome. Their costumes, designed by James Acheson, were directly inspired by the comics and managed to tell an interesting story just from some cloth and design work.

They demonstrate anonymity within an army and are perfect for stealthy missions as well. The costumes of the henchmen reflect that of the leaders like Nobu or Elektra, demonstrating a sort of ranking system which includes the colors worn. Daredevil’s costume may be getting the most attention, but the Hand is underrated in the clothing department.

8 Black Order And Thanos’ Army

MCU Henchmen The 10 Best Costume Designs

Both the Black Order and Thanos’ larger army including species like the Chitauri have some complex costume designs that demonstrate rank and role and all reflect the empire of Thanos. Common color schemes, including the use of purples to match the skin of Thanos, demonstrates some uniformity. Judianna Makovsky expertly worked on these designs.

The Black Order each have a unique costume, but they are clearly part of both this elite squad and a much larger army. When all positioned together, it’s clear that a lot of work went into try to create a cohesive and battle-ready look.

7 Hydra

Hydra has had a number of costumes across their MCU run. Both their WWII gear and their more modernized equipment feels like there’s some continuity from throughout the timeline. The blacks, greens, and of course the Hydra logo are almost always present.

There are a few reds as well thanks to the Red Skull’s influence and some interesting designs when it comes to the flamethrowers vs. the foot soldiers, but the Hydra costumes definitely stand out. In the Framework, any SHIELD suits were repurposed in a unique way to match the evil organization. Anna B. Sheppard and Jeffrey Kurland originally worked on these designs.

6 Kree

The Kree have been around in the MCU for quite some time. Their costumes differ depending on the type of Kree being portrayed on screen. The most well known Kree costumes are that of the elite squad that Captain Marvel was once a part of.

Using specialist tactical gear and sporting the colors and logos of the Kree Empire, these costumes are so much more than that of the traditional henchmen. But, there are also slightly less well-equipped versions that often utilize only some of the elements, such as the reinforced arm pads. Sanja Milkovic Hays was the costume designer on Captain Marvel who contributed the most to these creations.

5 Ultron Robots

Ultron’s design was already terrifying, but his hench-robots were designed with equal menace. The clever thing about these robots is that they were clearly quite different from the main Ultron, but still utilized many of his elements.

Almost indestructible and combining elements of Iron Man’s armor as well, the story was clearly conveyed through these robotic designs; although there is of course a debate over whether these metallic men are costumes. The look of Ultron and his robots though were a high point of the movie.

4 Wakandan Tribes

For a moment, the Jabari were seen to be the villainous henchmen of M’Baku and the Border Tribe were briefly the warriors fighting T’Challa for the throne. Their costumes are so incredible that it would have been difficult to ignore them.

With fantastic colors, authentic designs, and a brilliant level of detail weaved into them, both tribes have amazing costumes that certainly stand out compared to so many other villainous armies that may be found on the battlefield. Black Panther might have an incredible suit, but Wakandans in general know how to dress thanks to the work of Ruth E. Carter.

3 Hela’s Army

MCU Henchmen The 10 Best Costume Designs

Hela’s army is made up of the undead warriors of Asgard. They are troops that were once loyal to her and therefore use some of the same green color schemes that Hela’s own armor utilizes.

Their helmets also invoke the same spikey imagery and it’s difficult to ignore how the twisted metal makes these seem like corrupted armor from the traditional Asgardian armory. Their design concept sets them apart from traditional zombies and was worked on by Mayes C. Rubeo.

2 The Sovereign

MCU Henchmen The 10 Best Costume Designs

The Sovereign may be a strange alien species with golden skin, but they’ve taken their level of perfection to new heights thanks to their completely golden costuming as well. But there are some interesting choices made on the henchmen costumes.

Almost as royal as the Queen, those closest to her get to wear similar golden clothing. Those who work within the military side of things, however, wear a dark, black costume, which contrasts well against their golden tones. These clothing items were also worked on by Judianna Makovsky.

1 Dark Elves

The Dark Elves are some of the most underrated villains when it comes to how they look. They may have been overshadowed by their underwhelming leader, Malekith, but looks wise they are pretty astonishing.

Taking what fans know about elves traditionally and turning those concepts on their head, these costumes are very military heavy and yet seem almost mythical in nature. The masks chosen for the characters add an extra layer; easily striking fear into their prey. Wendy Partridge was the driving force behind these costumes.
