Godzilla vs. Kong’s Mechagodzilla has a lethal arsenal of weapons and powers at his disposal. The robotic monster that appeared in the latest installment of Legendary’s MonsterVerse was the fourth live-action version of the character in the Godzilla franchise.

He made his debut as the titular antagonist of Toho’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla in 1974. The mechanized replica of Godzilla was revealed to be the creation of an alien race whose plan was to conquer the Earth. After he was destroyed by Godzilla and King Caesar, he was rebuilt in the direct sequel, Terror of Mechagodzilla. The Heisei series, which rebooted the franchise, reimagined him in 1993’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II as a weapon of humanity. This time, his purpose was to save the humans from Godzilla, who was actually just trying to find his son. A somewhat similar approach to the kaiju was taken in the Millennium series, where he was renamed “Kiryu” and treated as a hero to the Japanese people.

There are differences between each of the three versions of Mechagodzilla, but there are also some notable consistencies. As for the MonsterVerse, it sent Mechagodzilla back to his villainous roots and gave him an extensive redesign. Built by APEX, the new incarnation of Godzilla’s robotic counterpart proved strong enough to challenge both Godzilla and Kong. In fact, Godzilla himself fell to Mechagodzilla’s might, and it took charging up Kong’s axe with his atomic breath for him to finally be brought down. The immense danger he posed to the two was due to all the abilities he possessed in the movie.

Shoulder Missiles

While running toward Mechagodzilla, Gojira was bombarded by missiles. Fired from cannons attached to the robot’s shoulders, these missiles let audiences know right away that APEX’s Titan has a remarkable amount of firepower. Not unlike the rockets fired by Toho’s Mechagodzilla, they were able to mildly injure Godzilla.

Jet Propulsion

Toho’s Mechagodzilla had jet thrusters on his body that enabled him to fly through the air. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, they served as a method of escape when Godzilla was starting to gain the upper hand. Godzilla vs. Kong’s Mechagodzilla, on the other hand, may not be able to fly, but he does come equipped with jets. But instead of using them to create distance between himself and Godzilla, Mechagodzilla weaponizes them in combat. By igniting his jets and propelling himself forward for short distances, he can add more power to his blows and make quick maneuvers when necessary. Because of both this and the increased length of his limbs, Mechagodzilla exercised a greater degree of mobility than fans are accustomed to seeing from him in Godzilla movies. In the past, speed has been a big problem for Mechagodzilla; Godzilla vs. Kong fixed that issue.

Tail Drill

Mechagodzilla’s whip-like tail contained a drill in the tip that he tried (and failed) to use on his opponents in two separate instances. The first attack was against Godzilla, but was blocked by Kong. The second time, Mechagodzilla aimed it at Kong’s face, and nearly succeeded in killing the gorilla with it. Thankfully though, he was thwarted by Josh (Julian Dennison), who poured alcohol all over Mechagodzilla’s control panel. This stalled his systems long enough for Kong to break free of his grip and tear him apart with his charged-up axe.

The tail drill is an interesting new addition to Mechagodzilla’s array of weapons. Prior to the MonsterVerse, Kiryu was the only Mechagodzilla who could use his tail for offensive purposes, but it didn’t have a drill. However, he did have one in his hand, which he used to puncture Godzilla’s thick hide. In Godzilla vs Kong, Mechagodzilla’s tail drill combines both into one strong weapon.

Laser Beam

Arguably Mechagodzilla’s strongest weapon was his red laser beam. The first time he used it was during a demonstration. To the shock of Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry), Madison (Millie Bobby Brown), and Josh, Mechagodzilla picked up a fully-grown Skullcrawler and obliterated its head with a laser beam. Like the alpha predator APEX based him on, his primary ranged attack comes from his mouth. That’s a bit different to how Mechagodzilla usually fires his energy blasts. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla’s Kiryu could open his jaws and shoot out an electrical surge of energy, but traditionally his laser cannon is located in his chest.

As previously noted, Mechagodzilla’s missiles can hurt Godzilla, but what’s usually responsible for most of the damage he can do is his lasers. The lasers have a lot to do with why it’s never good for Godzilla to be in firing range. What made matters worse for the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla was the fact that Mechagodzilla’s laser blast was stronger than Godzilla’s atomic breath. When their beams locked, Mechagodzilla’s blast overpowered Godzilla’s and knocked him over. That’s impressive, because there are few things in the Godzilla franchise that can repel the King of the Monsters’ signature weapon.

Energy-Charged Punches & Kicks

Mechagodzilla effortlessly killing the Skullcrawler proves that he was incredibly powerful from the very beginning, but what made him dangerous enough to go toe-to-toe with Godzilla – and win – was the mysterious “lifeforce” that Dr. Lind’s team and APEX found in the Hollow Earth. It was confirmed earlier in the movie that this blue energy source is the same atomic power that resides within Godzilla.

Godzilla’s inability to beat Mechagodzilla largely stemmed from the latter using that energy in close combat. Normally, getting too close to Godzilla would lead to his downfall, but his energy-charged attacks made a huge difference for him in Godzilla vs. Kong. After channeling power into his fist, the Titan unleashed devastating blows on Godzilla. Blue energy emitted from his hands with each hit. The toll it took on Godzilla was obvious, as he struggled to stay on his feet whenever Mechagodzilla landed a punch on him. Mechagodzilla exploited his weakness to this attack by transmitting this energy to his feet, thus forcing Godzilla to endure powered-up kicks as well. By focusing this energy into his stomps, Mechagodzilla wounded Godzilla further and kept him from regaining his footing.

One reason why Kong was able to beat Mechagodzilla when Godzilla couldn’t is that he only had to take one of Mechagodzilla’s punches. It’s not clear if he could have withstood the same beating that Godzilla had to suffer through from those blows.
