Men In Black 10 Facts Everyone Should Know About Boris The Animal

Boris the Animal is the primary villain of the third installment of Men in Black and had a strong connection to Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) in the past. His escape from MIB’s lunar maximum security prison led him to a ploy to travel back to 1969 to twist the timeline and nearly succeed in his species’ plans for world domination.

But there is more to Boris that makes him a fascinating foe and a worthy match against Agents J (Will Smith) and K. Here are the 10 facts that everyone should know about Boris the Animal.

Warning: spoilers ahead.

10 He Nearly Had A Different Name

In the early stages of the script and during pre-production, the villain was initially named Yaz. But it was changed to Boris, possibly due to a suggestion by iconic makeup artist Rick Baker, who is a huge fan of horror icon Boris Karloff. Interestingly enough, Yaz was also the supposed name of the antagonist of the first Men in Black movie before he was named simply as The Bug.

Speaking of on-the-nose names, in the movie’s context, the 2012 Boris resents being labeled “Boris the Animal”, something which J used as a distraction during the Apollo 11 launch climax.

9 He Is Of Boglodite Species

Boris is part of the Boglodite race of aliens, residing on the planet Boglodotia. Boglodites take a humanoid shape but have echinoderm-like spiky fingers, fanged teeth, a reptilian tongue, mushy skin and feet appendages for extra grip. They also possess superhuman strength and the ability to breathe in space.

Being parasitic extraterrestrials, the Boglodites depend on devouring planets to survive. In the original timeline, they set their course towards Earth but, thanks to the Arc Net Shield that was installed during the Apollo 11 launch, their invasion was blocked, wiping away their species and leaving Boris as the only existing Boglodite.

8 He Did Not Show His True Form Until His Near Death

Unlike previous villains in the Men in Black franchise, Boris the Animal never shows his true Boglodite form in any fight scene he has against J or K. In the first MIB, the Bug fought both agents in his humongous cockroach-like form until he was blasted by Laurel. In the second MIB, Serleena fought the agents with her enlarged worm form.

In MIB 3, after the climax in the Apollo launch tower, 1969 Boris appears only in his true form for a few seconds to provoke K into arresting him. Instead, young K exterminated him, altering the future 2012 timeline.

7 He Has A Lover That He Ditched Immediately

In the beginning of the movie, Boris breaks out of MIB’s LunarMax prison with the help of his girlfriend Lilly Poison. Played by singer Nicole Scherzinger, she aids Boris’ escape by visiting his cell and sneaking his spider-like companion Weasel into a cake she brought. They easily outwitted the prison guards when Boris blasts the roof and sucks the guards into space.

Lilly nearly got sucked up, as well, but Boris held onto her. He eventually lets her go, nonchalantly telling her, “Sorry, darling. We did love the cake.” Nothing is heard about her after. This truly shows Boris’ apathy towards humans.

6 He Has A Pet Living In His Hand

As mentioned, Boris had a spider-like pet named the Weasel. He resides inside Boris’s hollow right hand, providing deadly spikes to him as weapons. And when he is released, he takes down the foes blocking Boris’ way.

It was implied that Boris had two spider-like pets in both arms. In the normal 1969 timeline, K severed his left arm, killing the left-arm spider, before he arrested him. However, Weasel escaped and went into hiding for 40 years, until he was found by Lilly. In the altered 1969 timeline, J maintained the continuity by similarly severing the arm of 1969 Boris.

5 Both Versions Of Boris Meet Face-To-Face

Part of Boris’ plan when traveling back in time is to interact with the 1969 version of himself and cooperate in his operation to stop K and allow a Boglodite invasion. When the two Borises meet, however, the younger Boris condemns him for doing a poor job. Yet they reach common ground, with 1969 Boris stopping 1969 K from installing Arc Net and 2012 Boris stopping Agent J from getting in the way.

This cooperation of two time versions of the same villain is reminiscent of Biff Tannen in another Steven Spielberg production, Back to the Future Part II.

4 He Ties Into J’s Past

Before J, K and the Arc Net possessor Griffin could gain access to the launch tower, they were stopped by the military. However, Griffin convinced a skeptical colonel by showing him how their mission is vital for the future.

After Arc Net was successfully installed and Boris was stopped, the 1969 Boris attacked K but the colonel took a hit for himself. K retaliated by killing Boris this time. Uneventfully, the colonel’s son ran to the scene and asked where his father is. K neuralyzed the kid and J learned that the kid was himself, tying up the loose ends regarding why he was the only one who remembered K in 2012 and how K has been watching him.

3 He’s Played By Jemaine Clement

As half of the comedy musical duo Flight of the Conchords, Jemaine Clement established a solid career back in his home country of New Zealand. From their titular HBO show and his two collaborations with Taika Waititi (Eagle vs Shark and What We Do in the Shadows), he had a fruitful path as a comedian. He also did voice work, mostly villain roles in animated films, like the cockatoo Nigel in the two Rio movies and the crab Tamatoa in Moana.

Transforming into Boris took him four and a half hours to apply the whole-body prosthetic makeup. Rick Baker returned to the franchise to do his signature impressive makeup work on Clement.

2 He Has A Vendetta Against K

Boris the Animal is a worthy foe for Agent K. Ever since the latter thwarted his plans for his Boglodite race to infest the Earth and severed his left back in 1969, he bore a grudge against the seasoned agent. That is why in his escape, Boris targeted him directly by going back in time to kill a young Agent K to stop him from deploying Arc Net to protect Earth.

K, meanwhile, was alarmed to hear of Boris’ escape. He immediately deduced that Boris will find a way to time travel and stop him. Thus, he told J that he is “already dead”. Yet, in the altered 1969 timeline, the younger K decided to culminate the rivalry by shooting Boris.

1 His Goals Bear A Resemblance To Past MIB Villains

The villainous goals of Boris eerily resemble to those of previous MIB villains. Like them, he aims to take an all-powerful MacGuffin (which is Griffin in this case) out of Earth and allow the entire planet to be led into destruction from a more hostile alien species. The villain’s plan requires a henchman or an army. And it always leads to reconnecting to K’s past and finding a way to stop their plans.

Just like the other villains, Boris the Animal displayed a level of apathy and heartlessness, especially when it comes to killing civilians. Mostly, this is due to prioritizing their own species in a crab mentality way. No wonder Agents K and J dealt their missions with urgency.
