Whether you love her or hate her, there’s no doubt that Katie McGrath’s Morgana had the best character arc on Merlin. When fans first met Morgana, they were fond of Uther’s ward. She was outspoken, courageous, and very kind. They also appreciated how Morgana would stand her ground in the face of adversity.

However, there is no doubt that Morgana made a better villain as she became more complex and interesting as the series went on. Would you like some examples of her most defining moments? Keep reading to discover the 5 moments Morgana was nice and the 5 moments she was an absolute witch.

10 Nice: Destroying the Afanc

In “The Mark Of Nimueh,” Morgana made it known that she wouldn’t be seen as a damsel in distress and volunteered to help Merlin and Arthur clear Gwen’s name. In this episode, Camelot is struck with a mysterious illness, which sees Gwen’s father and several residents on death’s door. Refusing to see him suffer, Merlin heals him with magic.

However, the quick recovery raises suspicion and Gwen ends up getting arrested for sorcery. With Gwen’s life on the line, Morgana protests her innocence to Uther. When this doesn’t work, she rushes to Merlin and Gaius’s chambers to see what she can do to help. It was one of the rare times where she was more honorable than Arthur.

9 Absolute Witch: Torturing Gaius

One of the main reasons fans had a hatred for Morgana’s character was because of how much damage she caused to get what she wanted. An example of this was in “The Secret Sharer” when she arranged for Gaius to be tortured so she could learn the identity of Emrys.

After her battle with Emrys, Morgana finds Alator of the Catha and asks him to kidnap Gaius in return for her healing bracelet. She then allows Gaius to be tortured for days by Alator. Luckily, Gaius only confesses Merlin’s identity to Alator. However, Morgana became public enemy number one for fans as she indirectly upset Gaius with her actions.

8 Nice: Saving Merlin’s village

Another heroic moment of Morgana’s had to be when she raced off to Ealdor to help Merlin save his village. In “The Moment of Truth,” Merlin’s mother, Hunith, visits Camelot after her village is attacked and raided by bandits. When she asks Uther if he could help them fight, the king refuses to grant her request, saying it would cause a war between the kingdoms.

With Merlin set to return home, Morgana and Gwen refuse to let him go alone and agree to help defend Ealdor. Later on, both Morgana and Gwen say they only volunteered to help because of all the things Merlin has done for them. If Morgana wouldn’t have turned evil further down the line, this friendship could have forged a great alliance.

7 Absolute Witch: Killing Innocents Whilst Queen

The first time fans realized Morgana couldn’t be redeemed was when she ordered the killing of many Camelot residents. In “The Coming of Arthur: Part 2,” Morgana begins her reign of terror when she forces the knights of Camelot to pledge allegiance to her.

When Leon and the other Knights refuse her request, Morgana forces their hand and gets her soldiers to turn on the crowd. She doesn’t even show an ounce of remorse for her actions, Morgana just continues to moan about why the Knights and the people of Camelot aren’t loyal to her (the irony).

6 Nice: Saving Mordred

Remember when Morgana said, “sometimes you’ve got to do what you think is right, and damn the consequences?” – If this is the type of moral code she abided by then doesn’t it suggests she wasn’t always a bad person? Fans have to admit that her heart was in the right place when she continued to vouch for the lives of innocent, magic users.

One episode this was most notable in was “The Beginning of The End,” where Morgana smuggled Mordred out of the city after he was attacked by Camelot’s patrol. Forgetting the prophecy for a moment, fans have to put themselves in Morgana’s shoes and remember that she didn’t know about Mordred’s future. She just wanted to ensure that an innocent child wasn’t executed for something he couldn’t control. That’s pretty heroic.

5 Absolute Witch: Torturing Merlin

While Morgana could be seen as a heroic warrior, she could also be just as evil as any other villain. In “A Servant of Two Masters,” fans saw how conniving Morgana had become when she tortured and brainwashed Merlin into doing her bidding.

After ambushing Merlin and Arthur in the woods, Morgana took the sorcerer back to her alcove and turned him into her personal assassin by using the Fomorrah. As Morgana had ordered Merlin to kill Arthur, the magician wouldn’t be free unless he fulfilled her wish. If Morgana had succeeded in her plan, she would have utterly broken Merlin’s spirit.

4 Nice: Asking Arthur to save Gwen

Another underrated moment of Morgana and Gwen’s friendship had to be when the king’s ward called out those who refused to rescue Gwen. In “Lancelot and Guinevere,” Morgana and her maid ended up getting themselves into a spot of trouble when they are ambushed by outlaws while visiting Gorlois’s grave.

As Gwen sacrificed herself to save Morgana, the sorceress returns to Camelot and demands the King send Arthur and some men to rescue her. When none of the men step up to challenge Uther’s refusal, Morgana lashes out and calls them cowards and heartless. Although Arthur was arranging a rescue, Morgana tried once more to convince him to go. A friend you would have loved to have in your corner.

3 Absolute Witch: Torturing and brainwashing Gwen

By the time season 5 came about, Morgana and Gwen’s friendship was completely destroyed as the witch continued to seek glory as Camelot’s Queen. In “The Dark Tower,” Morgana becomes despicable when she decides to break Gwen’s mentality by exposing the Queen to her worst fears and then brainwashes her.

At first, Gwen appears to resist her methods. However, Morgana manages to break Gwen when she enchants a sword that ends up killing Elyan. The episode then ends with Gwen blaming Arthur for everything and pledging her allegiance to Morgana. It just showed fans how ruthless she had become.

2 Nice: Advocating for Merlin

One of the nicest things Morgana ever did was when she vouched for Merlin several times to Arthur. Fans may not have realized it but Morgana was instrumental in forging the bond between Arthur and Merlin, especially in season 1. In “The Mark of Nimueh,” Morgana was the one who persuaded Arthur to trust Merlin’s instincts about the Afanc.

She also helped forge the bond between the servant and the Prince in “The Poisoned Chalice” when she convinced Arthur to disobey his father’s orders and save Merlin’s life. Not to mention how she vouched for Merlin when she told Arthur she trusted Merlin to keep her secrets in “The Beginning the End.” Regardless of how Morgana turned out, she played an important part in Merlin and Arthur’s relationship.

1 Absolute Witch: Betraying Arthur

The worst thing Morgana ever did had to be when she betrayed Arthur. As soon as Morgana found out that she was Arthur’s sister, their relationship changed – and not for the better. Instead of working together to create a balance, Morgana decided that she wanted the throne for herself and set about trying to bringing Arthur’s downfall.
