For five seasons, fans had the pleasure of watching the romance between Arthur and Guinevere blossom on-screen. Beginning in Season 2 of Merlin, the seeds of romance were sown when Gwen provided Arthur with shelter while he was trying to fulfill a quest. Arthur became more intrigued with the seamstress as she was the only person who didn’t give him preferential treatment.

Eventually, the pair went on to get married. However, their relationship was put to the test several times, especially when residual feelings arose between Lancelot and Gwen when he returned. 10 Lancelot: He Noticed Her Right Away

While Arthur and Gwen’s romance was a slow burn, the relationship between Lancelot and Gwen was the complete opposite. As soon as he stepped foot in Camelot, he was completely infatuated with the maidservant. First meeting in “Lancelot,” Gwen and the future knight grew close when she helped fit him for chainmail.

Lancelot’s infatuation with the future queen continued in the episode when fans saw him gazing at Gwen in the grand hall. As Arthur was remarking on Morgana’s beauty, Lancelot agrees with his opinion but continues to focus on Gwen. Near the end of the episode, the nobleman manages to attract Gwen’s attention with his kind and ornate goodness.

9 Arthur: Defying Social Expectations

One thing a lot of people enjoy is the forbidden lovers trope, which is exactly what you get with Gwen and Arthur. When the series first began, Gwen and Arthur were in different social classes. He was the prince of Camelot, and she was Morgana’s maidservant. Uther wouldn’t have even considered Gwen to be a suitor as she was also the daughter of a blacksmith.

However, Arthur didn’t care about this, and told Uther that if he was to get married, it would be to a woman he loved (“The Changeling”). As soon as Arthur began his romance with Gwen, no other woman caught his attention. His heart always belonged to her, which is why he made her his queen.

8 Lancelot: He Lets Her Go…Twice

One of the most admirable traits about Lancelot had to be his selfless, noble heart. You wouldn’t be able to find a bad bone in the knight’s body, and he proved that when he let Gwen go…twice. The first time he leaves Gwen was in “Lancelot,” where the future knight pledges to return to Camelot once he feels worthy of his place in the kingdom.

Lancelot and Gwen then briefly reunited in Season 2, with the knight rescuing the seamstress when she was taken captive by Hengist. It looked like the couple were on the verge of picking up where they left off until Lancelot realized Gwen and Arthur had feelings for each other. As a result, Lancelot leaves again because he doesn’t want to disturb their happiness.

7 Arthur: He Would Always Come For Her

One of the best parts of Arthur and Gwen’s relationship was how Gwen managed to humanize the prince-turned-king. When fans were first introduced to Arthur, he was an arrogant and brutish bully who cared about nothing but himself. However, his personality began to change when he began associating with Gwen.

When Arthur’s feelings for Gwen grew, he became a lot more compassionate and altruistic. When she was being held hostage in Hengist’s manor, Arthur wasted no time in going to rescue her. When she was kidnapped by Morgana and held hostage in the dark tower, he didn’t hesitate to come after. If Gwen fell off the face of the earth, Arthur would do everything he could to find her again.

6 Lancelot: He Doesn’t Get In The Way

Although Lancelot let Gwen go, this didn’t mean that his feelings for the seamstress dissipated. If anything, they were stronger than ever when he returned in Season 4. At first impression, Lancelot appeared to have gotten over his feelings for Gwen when he was seen to keep a respectful distance from the seamstress.

However, it was clear that there were some residual feelings on Lancelot’s behalf as the swordsman looked discouraged to see Arthur and Gwen kissing. Still, the knight doesn’t try to ruin the relationship, and treats both Gwen and Arthur with respect.

5 Arthur: He Treats Her Like An Equal

While Lancelot may be the noblest knight of all time, many fans will agree that he has a hero complex and treats Gwen like a damsel. However, in her relationship with Arthur, Gwen is viewed as an equal. This is most apparent when Arthur decides to marry her and make her queen.

In “Lancelot du Lac,” Arthur tells Agravaine that he plans on proposing to Guinevere. When Agravaine begins to protest, Arthur shuts down him saying “she is a valuable support and a shrewd counselor.” He also says that he didn’t want a compliant queen, and neither would Camelot. It proved why Arthur and Gwen had a healthy relationship.

4 Lancelot: His Sacrifice For Arthur

In “The Darkest Hour,” Lancelot proved why he was the bravest and most selfless person of all when he sacrificed himself to protect Arthur. In this episode, Camelot was attacked by ghost-like creatures who managed to kill several tenants by freezing them to death. This was due to Morgana opening the veil between worlds, meaning Camelot was exposed to much evil.

As Arthur set out repairing the veil, Gwen requests a favor from Lancelot, and asks if he can bring Arthur home. Lancelot swears he would do so with his life. No one ever believed that he would swap places with Arthur and sacrifice himself to repair the veil. Yet Lancelot proved to be a man of his word, ensuring Gwen and Arthur’s happiness was prolonged.

3 Arthur: They Make Each Other Better

While Gwen has had a good influence on Arthur, he has also been seen to have a good influence on her too. After all, the woman fans met at the beginning of the show is completely different from the one they saw at the end. When Gwen was first introduced, she was kind but also quiet and acquiescent.

However, when Gwen began to associate with Arthur, fans got to see her come out of her shell. She became much bolder, more outspoken and a lot braver. Fans also enjoyed seeing how Gwen’s confidence grew in the role of queen, with Arthur instilling belief that she would be just as fair and kind a ruler as any other noblewomen.

2 Lancelot: He Genuinely Loved Her

Hypothetically speaking, if Gwen had decided that she didn’t want to be queen and would have chosen Lancelot, she wouldn’t have been miserable. Gwen had once said that he represented “everything beautiful in the world,” and was devastated with his departure — which emphasized how deeply her feelings ran for the selfless knight.

If Gwen hadn’t been interested in Arthur, it is more than likely that she would have ended up getting married to Lancelot and became a Lady of court. It would have been a happy match too as Lancelot had proven he wouldn’t have strayed away.

1 Arthur: He Genuinely Loved Her Too

On the other hand, Guinevere was also happiest in her relationship with Arthur. Remember when her kiss broke the love spell placed on him? Or when he managed to de-enchant Gwen in “With All My Heart” by reminding her of the way she accepted his proposal? Let’s not forget how they both have said they couldn’t live without the other.

While Lancelot can be deemed noble and altruistic, these traits were also the reason why his romance with Gwen was fleeting. He proved that he could live without her. However, Arthur’s love for Gwen was transcendental — no matter how tough things got or how far apart they were, something would always draw them back together.
