BBC’s Merlin was indeed a magical series. Starring Colin Morgan, Bradley James, and Katie McGrath, the show was loosely based on several Arthurian legends that followed the perspective of the legendary sorcerer, Merlin. Merlin dedicates his life to the future king of Camelot, protecting Arthur from magical foe.

However, several episodes have been deeply rooted in tragedy, with fans watching as Merlin and Arthur suffer through quite a bit to save Camelot. From Agravaine’s betrayal to Uther’s death, here are the 10 saddest moments on the show, ranked.

10 Arthur Discovers Agravaine Betrayed Him (S4.E12)

Arthur was known to face a lot of betrayals over the show’s five seasons, but one that completely devastated him was caused by his uncle, Agravaine. In Season 4, Agravaine was Arthur’s trusted adviser who came to Camelot to help the young prince after Uther became incapacitated.

However, this was all a ruse as Agravaine was secretly working with Morgana. Arthur only realizes the betrayal when he sees Agravaine leading the charge against Camelot. It becomes even more heartbreaking when Arthur asks Merlin why the pair hate him so much. Merlin doesn’t know what to say as Arthur tries to comprehend why his family continues to betray him.

9 Lancelot Realizes Arthur Loves Gwen (S2.E04)

One of the biggest plots in Merlin was the love triangle between Arthur, Gwen, and Lancelot. Lancelot and Gwen had a brief relationship in Season 1, but it ended quickly after Uther discovered Lancelot lied about his nobility (“Lancelot”). He soon fled from Camelot, promising to return when he felt that he was worthy of becoming a knight.

However, he makes a reappearance in the episode “Lancelot and Guinevere,” rescuing the maid when she becomes imprisoned by the bandit, Hengist. While the pair are on the verge of reconciling, they are shocked to see Arthur and Merlin have also organized a rescue party for Gwen. When asking why Arthur risked his life, Lancelot soon realizes the prince is in love with Gwen. Lancelot then decides to leave because he doesn’t want to get in the way of the budding romance.

8 Uther Dies (S4.E03)

No one felt bad for Uther when he died in “The Wicked Day.” However, it didn’t stop fans from feeling sympathetic towards Arthur — especially when the prince was seen crying over his body, begging his father to not leave him.

Arthur and Merlin set out on a quest to save the king after Uther was fatally wounded. While they continue to search, Merlin decides to try and heal him with his magic. This cure would have worked if it weren’t for Morgana’s necklace repelling his efforts. Merlin then waits all night outside the throne room as Arthur says his final goodbye.

7 Merlin Poisons Morgana (S2.E12)

One of the saddest moments came in the episode “The Fires of Idirsholas” as fans saw the beginning of Morgana’s descent into evil. After teaming up with her sister, Morgause, Morgana becomes unaware that she is being used as a vessel in her sister’s plan to take over Camelot. As the town falls victim to a sleeping curse, Merlin finds the only way to break it is if Morgana dies.

Merlin had been advocating for Morgana ever since Kilgharrah revealed she was destined for evil. Season 2 saw Morgana was desperate for Uther’s death but didn’t want any harm to befall her friends. So it was hard to watch as Morgana realized Merlin had poisoned her with no explanation.

6 Merlin And Balinor’s Reunion (S2.E13)

Merlin was seen to be the most tragic character on the show. The poor sorcerer had to live a double life, dedicating both of them to Arthur. He suffered more than anyone, and barely had any time to grieve because someone was always in trouble or his secrets could be exposed. An example of this was when Merlin met his father.

Merlin sought out Balinor after Kilgharrah began to attack Camelot. The father and son briefly reconciled after Merlin revealed his relationship with the Dragonlord. However, this was also met with tragedy after Balinor sacrifices himself to protect Merlin. The scene gets even more emotional when he is forced to hide his emotions from Arthur.

5 Arthur Calls Off His Engagement To Gwen (S4.E09)

In the episode “Lancelot du Lac,” Arthur was heartbroken to discover Gwen and Lancelot kissing. Unbeknownst to all, Morgana had resurrected Lancelot as a Shade to ruin the relationship between Gwen and Arthur. Morgana then sent Shade Lancelot to seduce Gwen, giving him an enchanted bracelet to help awaken her feelings.

Morgana’s plan to tear Arthur and Gwen apart is successful when he catches them in the middle of a tryst. Although he is advised to execute them both, Arthur decides to banish Gwen. He then tells Merlin that even though he loves her, he wouldn’t be able to trust her again. It’s hard to watch as Arthur, Gwen, and Lancelot’s honor is destroyed in the name of revenge.

4 Gwaine Dies (S5.E13)

Gwaine first made an appearance in Season 3 when he helped defend Merlin and Arthur in a tavern brawl (“Gwaine”). He became a close friend of Merlin’s and eventually a knight of the round table. He also had a strong friendship with Percival, with the pair often seen robbing food from the kitchens and teaming up on quests.

“The Diamond of the Day: Part 2” showed the two knights pair up on one final quest to kill Morgana. However, they the sorceress soon captured them, torturing the two for the whereabouts of Arthur. Although both men fought valiantly against her, Gwaine couldn’t handle it, and gave up Arthur’s location. Percival then managed to get a final farewell with his friend before he succumbed to his injuries.

3 Lancelot’s Sacrifice (S4.Ep02)

“The Darkest Hour: Part 2” forced fans to say goodbye to one of their favorite characters. As Morgana had opened the veil to the Spirit World, the only way anyone could fix it was to give up their life. Lancelot decided to make the ultimate sacrifice for Merlin and Arthur as he walked into the veil — much to the devastation of his friends.

As a memorial was held in his honor, Gwen was seen to breakdown and blame herself for the knight’s sacrifice. She tells Arthur how Lancelot promised to protect Arthur with his life — she just didn’t believe he would take this literally. What makes it even worse was how Arthur walks away afterward, leaving her crying in the courtyard.

2 Freya Dies (S2.E09)

In the episode “The Lady of Lake,” fans got to see Merlin fall in love with Freya. Freya was a Druid girl who had been captured by a bounty hunter because she was cursed. However, Merlin was unaware of this, and freed her from the cage which she was confined in. Freya then went on to kill several innocents in her Bastet form.

When he did discover the truth, Merlin was prepared to run away with Freya. Yet this plan was put on hold when Freya is discovered trying to sneak out of the city. Although she managed to escape, she was fatally wounded in the process. Merlin decides to carry Freya down to the Lake of Avalon where she dies in arms. A heartbroken Merlin then returns to Camelot.

1 Arthur Dies (S5.E13)

Was there any doubt that this moment would be in the number one slot? The whole premise of the show had Merlin trying to protect Arthur so he could become the greatest king ever. That is why it completely blindsided everyone when Mordred mortally wounded him in the Season 5 finale.

Merlin tried to do everything to save Arthur, even revealing his magic to the king. Unfortunately, there is nothing Merlin can do to save him, and fans are forced to watch as Arthur slowly dies. His final farewell has to be the most heartbreaking moment of all as he thanks the sorcerer for everything he’s done. Fans will always remember Merlin sobbing as he laid the king to rest.
