Messenger and Instagram appear to be suffering from an issue where some users are unable to send DMs, but a fix is understood to be coming. Facebook, now Meta, is no stranger to experiencing problems, and with the company owning and operating so many popular messaging and communication services, any time spent down tends to impact on a significant number of users at the same time.

Just last month, Facebook encountered a significant outage that resulted in all of the company’s apps and services going offline. While the problem was understood to be the result of a configuration change, the outage left many without access to the company’s services for a number of hours. Users had plenty to say on the matter as well, with a variety of memes making their way to Twitter, Reddit and elsewhere.

While it remains to be seen just how widespread the current problem is, users have taken to other social media sites to note that Messenger and Instagram are currently experiencing issues. The main problem appears to be the inability to send direct messages between accounts, although users may also be experiencing other issues as well. In addition to the social media reports, Down Detector has also noted a sudden spike in complaints for both services.

A Fix For The Meta Problem Is Coming

As is often the case with situations like this, the services affected are aware of the problem. While the official Meta and Facebook accounts haven’t confirmed any issues, the Messenger social media handle has, noting that the team is “working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.” Likewise, Alexandru Voica, Meta’s communications manager, also sent out a similar Tweet confirming the issue and that a fix is currently being worked on. Instagram has also sent out its own message to apologize for the inconvenience and ask users to “hang tight.”

As Voica’s Tweets points out, there are also users reporting issues with Facebook as well although these currently appear to be mostly related to the Workplace Chat app. For now, WhatsApp appears to be unaffected by the problem that’s impacting the other Meta-owned apps and services. For those that remain unable to send direct messages, there’s not a lot that can be done until a fix rolls out. The good news is that once an issue for a service like Messenger is fixed, the same fix is usually also rolled out to the other Facebook/Meta app and services at the same time.
