Metal Gear Solid has had some of gaming’s most iconic boss fights and it made a few great ones fly under the radar.

The Metal Gear Solid franchise has long been known as one of the best in gaming and it also features some of the most iconic boss fights in history. Even those who aren’t fans of the series know about Psycho Mantis reading your memory card, the hand-to-hand combat battles with Liquid, the beauty of fighting The Boss, and the long war with The End.

While those are all memorable, there are many that have flown under the radar. These are the boss fights that deserve to be mentioned among the best in the franchise but are overlooked and underrated by gamers for whatever reason.

10 Screaming Mantis (Metal Gear Solid 4)

As noted, everyone knows about the trippy fight against Psycho Mantis in the original Metal Gear Solid. Much less shine is given to the sequel of sorts from the fourth installment. Screaming Mantis has similar powers and is part of the Beauty and the Beast Unit.

Screaming Mantis uses all of her skills, including controlling bodies like a puppeteer and utilizing misdirection to get into the player’s head. You have to be smart to beat her, using things like your syringe, shaking your controller, and more. The surprise appearance from Psycho Mantis’ spirit is a great one and an added bonus.

9 Eli (Metal Gear Solid V)

When the trailer first released for Metal Gear Solid V, most fans saw a young kid with long blonde hair and immediately got the sense that they were looking at a young Liquid Snake. That turned out to be the case but not many expected they would have to fight this child.

Although gamers were no stranger to fighting Liquid Snake, this one proved to be different. The last battle in Metal Gear Solid is legendary but this one might actually be better. It’s based heavily in CQC and there’s a versatility to it that you don’t get in other fights. Whether you win with CQC or your stun shotgun, it’s great.

8 Harrier (Metal Gear Solid 2)

In the first Metal Gear Solid, the player goes toe-to-toe with a Hind D piloted by Liquid Snake. It’s a memorable fight but it was actually bested in the sequel. That game saw Raiden take on a harrier jet piloted by Vamp and also including Solidus Snake.

What makes this superior is the setting and the situation. Raiden only has a small section of the Big Shell to use without much cover, making it difficult. Plus, you can really only use the Stinger missile launcher. Thankfully, Snake and his helicopter are there to help when needed.

7 Quiet (Metal Gear Solid V)

This franchise and boss battles against skilled snipers go hand-in-hand. The first Metal Gear Solid had an emotional showdown with Sniper Wolf, while Metal Gear Solid 3 featured The End, who would have a lengthy epic clash with Snake unless the player used a loophole to beat him.

Metal Gear Solid V kept that up with Quiet but added a twist to it. She had supernatural abilities that let her basically shake you off as soon as you got her in your crosshairs. In classic series style, you could get creative and have a supply drop land on her head for an attack, adding fun to this challenging fight.

6 Metal Gear Rays (Metal Gear Solid 2)

The fight against Metal Gear REX in the first game was tough and imposing given the size of the machine. The follow-up game took that to the next level by having Raiden take on a seemingly endless supply of Metal Gear RAY units. On higher difficulties, this is near impossible.

It is notable that while there are many to battle, they mostly come at you one at a time. It’s still a relentless fight that will ultimately leave the player exhausted. An added bonus is the emotional ending where Olga comes face to face with Solidus.

5 The Fury (Metal Gear Solid 3)

Snake Eater had its fair share of iconic bosses. The Boss herself is a huge one, while the aforementioned fight with The End is memorable. There’s also a unique clash with The Sorrow, a brutal one with Volgin, the first encounter with Ocelot, and so much more.

That means someone like The Fury has gone overlooked, which is a shame because the fight is really good. It’s similar to the Vulcan Raven fight but with higher stakes and it’s tougher overall. The fire attacks, harsh environment, and lack of radar all add to the epic feel.

4 Olga Gurlukovich (Metal Gear Solid 2)

Obviously, everyone discusses playing as Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2. After all, he’s the protagonist for the vast majority of the story. That’s probably why people don’t talk all that much about the two or so hours where you get to control Solid Snake at the start.

While on the tanker, Snake encounters Olga Gurlukovich and a gunfight ensues. It’s not particularly difficult since it’s the first fight but it’s a lot of fun. There’s first-person action, both have cover, and you have to get creative by shooting out lights or hitting things that will block Olga’s vision.

3 Laughing Octopus (Metal Gear Solid 4)

Although the Beauty and the Beast Corps were something of a mixed bag in Metal Gear Solid 4, the first encounter with one is actually the high point. That one sees Snake go up against Laughing Octopus, which becomes one of the series’ most unique boss fights.

Laughing Octopus uses camouflage skills to hide in plain sight, forcing the player to hunt her down. It’s the kind of fun twist on stealth the franchise needed at that point. Her hiding spots are incredibly impressive and you have to fight her multiple times to see them all.

2 Metal Gear REX vs. Metal Gear RAY (Metal Gear Solid 4)

After going up against Metal Gear REX and RAY in the first two games, the fourth installment upped the ante by seeing how they’d fare against each other. The whole thing felt like total fan service but you can’t help but appreciate that the series gave players a mech fight.

To add to it, Snake was in REX while Liquid Ocelot controlled Ray and the fight went down at Shadow Moses, the site of the first installment. It feels like something out of a totally different game, which is part of why it stands out as being a highlight.

1 Solidus Snake (Metal Gear Solid 2)

It’s not often that the final boss fight in a game is one that is overlooked. However, that’s the case with Metal Gear Solid 2. The first game had an epic showdown with Liquid, the third had the emotion of the fight with The Boss, and the fourth had an even better fight with Liquid.

The second saw Raiden take on Solidus, who are two less popular characters. Despite that, this deserves way more love because it’s awesome. The fact that it’s a sword fight on a New York City roof is cool enough but it’s even better when you consider that Solidus uses all sorts of tricks like walls of flames and his tentacles.
