Metroid 10 Ways Samus Has Done More Harm Than Good For The Galaxy

Samus Aran is the protagonist and face of Nintendo’s Metroid franchise. The series has Samus fighting against alien threats such as the titular Metroids, Space Pirates, and the X-Parasites. The most recent installment, Metroid Dread on the Nintendo Switch, follows up on Metroid Fusion and deals with the proliferating threat of the X-Parasites.

Samus is a bounty hunter by trade, and it’s undeniable that she has done a lot of good for the galaxy and its governing body, the Galactic Federation. However, there is another way to interpret Samus’ actions. One could argue that, despite possibly having good intentions, Samus has done more harm than good for the galaxy she tries to protect.

10 Just About Every Decision She Made In Metroid: Other M

Metroid: Other M for the Nintendo Wii and Wii U is a controversial title for several reasons. Chief among them is the questionable decision-making skills that Samus exhibits throughout the game. This could be written off as some kind of maternal grief for the Metroid infant she had to let go of, but it still feels like Samus should have known better than to do many of the things she did throughout the plot of this game.

Two things, in particular, stand out. First, she allows Adam Malkovich to dictate her every decision, down to what weapons she can use and when to use her armor, throughout the game. The other decision, which is even more controversial, is Samus’ paralysis in the face of a returned Ridley. This has been referred to as a PTSD episode, but it still resulted in a Galactic Federation soldier being killed by the creature while Samus more-or-less just watched.

9 Almost Unleashing Gorea While On A Quest For “Ultimate Power”

Metroid Prime: Hunters for the Nintendo DS is an oft-forgotten entry in the Metroid series. In this game, Samus and six other bounty hunters are lured out to the Alimbic Cluster by a promise of “ultimate power.”

In reality, this “ultimate power” is just a lure to get Samus and the other bounty hunters to unleash an entity that was hidden in the Alimbic Cluster. This creature is called Gorea, and he almost succeeds in his escape. Thankfully, Samus and the other bounty hunters get their act together and stop Gorea before this happens.

8 Serving Raven Beak (Albeit Unknowingly) On Planet ZDR

An AI called Adam guides Samus throughout much of Metroid Dead. This Adam is based on the now-deceased Adam Malkovich, which makes Samus more receptive to his orders and instructions.

Adam’s communications are revealed to be from a Chozo called Raven Beak who wanted Samus to gain more power on Planet ZDR so he could absorb it and the Metroid DNA from her. Raven Beak almost succeeds in this before Samus’ rage transforms her armor into a Metroid variant and she is able to put Raven Beak down.

7 Killing Ghor, Gandrayda, and Rundas

Ghor, Gandrayda, and Rundas were the three bounty hunters tasked with protecting the planet Norion from Space Pirates alongside Samus. In the end, all four are corrupted by Dark Samus and the Phazon energy that she generates.

Samus somehow escapes, but not without suffering corruption as well. She has to track down and kill the other three hunters who fell to the corruption. While Samus really had no choice in the matter, these three were other hunters willing to help the Galactic Federation, and the galaxy is a lesser place in their absence.

6 Failing To Stop The X-Parasite On Her First Encounter

This is another instance where Samus’ failings are less a result of her decision-making and more a shortcoming in her capabilities. In Metroid Fusion on the GameBoy Advance, Samus was tasked with defending a research team at SR388 before being infected with the X-Parasite. These beings were the natural prey of Metroids, and the research team had to infect Samus with a Metroid injection to save her from the X.

Samus having Metroid DNA has ramifications for the rest of the Metroid canon, as shown in Metroid Dread. In addition, her failure to stop the X-Parasite also results in the research station being overrun with them.

5 Crashing The Research Station Into SR388

The X-Parasite invasion in Metroid Fusion leads Samus to have only a few solutions on the research station and the planet it orbits, SR388. X-Parasites spread frighteningly quickly, and their infection rate grows exponentially as they assimilate more and more living things.

In the end, Samus had to crash the research station into SR388. It’s unclear if there were any other solutions to this, but it could easily be argued that both the research station and SR388 could have been valuable to the Galactic Federation in learning how to combat the X-Parasites if they ever appear again. And they will.

4 Allowing Herself To Be Bonded With The Quiet Robe X-Parasite

In fact, the X-Parasites were a centerpiece in Metroid Dread. Samus unknowingly opened a vault that unleashed them across Planet ZDR. This meant she had to fight the X-Parasite as they spread across the planet, and, ultimately, she had to destroy ZDR.

As Samus tried to leave ZDR, an X-Parasite mimicking the Chozo known as Quiet Robe bonded with Samus to cleanse the Metroid DNA from her body. However, this would presumably mean that Samus now has X-Parasite DNA in her, which seems no better than her having Metroid DNA.

3 Killing Metroid Prime And Creating Dark Samus As A Result

The final boss of Metroid Prime on the Nintendo GameCube is, well, the Metroid Prime. Samus has to use the mysterious Phazon energy to kill the Metroid Prime, but this allows the Metroid to absorb the Phazon energy out of Samus’ suit.

This led to the birth of Dark Samus, which meant further death and destruction across the galaxy in Metroid Prime II: Echoes and Metroid Prime III: Corruption.

2 Refusing To Kill The Final Metroid Infant

The ending of Metroid II: Samus Returns on the GameBoy as well as its remake Metroid: Samus Returns on the Nintendo 3DS has Samus sparing an infant Metroid from the eradication of the Metroid species as ordered by the Galactic Federation. This also had unending ramifications for the galaxy.

First, Ridley attacks Samus to get the infant. Samus gives the infant to the Space Science Academy, which leads to it being attacked by Ridley as well. This also allowed various factions to replicate and experiment further on the Metroids, allowing them to continue to plague the galaxy.

1 She Has Effectively Facilitated The Destruction Of Several Planets

Samus’ missions consistently end with a planet being destroyed, and it seems like there should be alternate solutions to some of these problems that don’t result in untold loss of life and culture, not to mention the innate gravitational consequences of a celestial body exploding.

Planets that have been blown up by Samus, or as a result of a conflict that Samus was involved in, include but are not limited to Planet ZDR, SR388, Phaaze (which, admittedly, was a malevolent sentient planet), Dark Aether, and Zebes.
