Metroid 8 Best Weapons Ranked

Introduced in 1986, Metroid remains one of the most iconic video game titles of all time. The classic Nintendo game follows the heroic exploits of Samus Arun, a galactic fighter out to stop a band of space pirates and their monstrous parasites from taking over the universe. Along the way, she uses various weapons of increasing power to defeat his foes.

While the countless Metroid sequels and spinoffs feature upgraded versions of the weapons introduced in the original game, the inaugural outing presented comparatively limited options. As Metroid celebrates its 35th anniversary, now is as good a time as any to recall the most impressive items in Samus’ arsenal.

8 Ice Beam

When Samus isn’t in the mood to kill an enemy, the easiest way to incapacitate them is to freeze them using an Ice Beam. The ice beams are particularly effective against larvae who cannot subsist in cold temperatures. Also, once a creature or item is frozen, Samus can use them as a platform or bridge to move through space. A gamer can find the Ice Beams in the Chozo Statues in Brinstar and Norfair.

While Ice Beams do not kill most enemies on direct contact, they can stun them long enough to either evade them entirely or shatter them using a higher-powered firearm. Ice Beams continue to be upgraded throughout the franchise as one of Samus’ favorite weapons.

7 Long Beam

When Samus’ stock power beam isn’t enough, the weapon can be upgraded to become a Long Beam, which increases the distance a shot can be fired as well as the damage it inflicts on opponents. Whereas Samus’ normal beams can only be fired at short range, the Long Beam extends across the entire screen and strikes enemies at far range. Long Beams can be found in North-West Brinstar.

In later versions of the game, Long Beams can be augmented by adding Charge Beams, which increase overall power. Long Beams can also boost the range of Ice Beams and Wave Beams.

6 Wave Beam

The Wave Beam weapon is extremely useful for allowing Samus to pass through walls like a specter and destroy the Taramargas guard monsters. While it inflicts medium damage, the beam disburses a wave-shaped trajectory that homes in on its predetermined target and uses electroshock charges o paralyze enemies. Wave Beams can be found in upper Norfair.

In addition to charging power lines and opening purple doors, the trusty Wave Beam is a workhorse weapon that has been upgraded multiple times as the gaming series progressed.

5 Bombs

Once all weaponized beams are exhausted, it’s time to upgrade the Metroid arsenal with explosive Bombs. A universal weapon in nearly every game in the series, Bombs are used to stun foes, inflict medium damage on enemies, and exact long-range attacks on remotely located baddies.

In addition to destroying sandstone walls and weak metal alloy barriers, Bombs are an extremely effective tool due to their small, easy-to-wield stature. They may not be the best weapons to take on large-scale attacks but they are ideal for defeating final bosses like Amorbis and Flaahgra in one-on-one battles.

4 Missiles

Once all of Samus’ bombs are depleted, it’s time to upgrade to the high-powered arsenal of Missiles (aka Rockets) that are featured in nearly every series entry. Inflicting high damage on enemies, missiles are far more deadly and powerful than the other firearms in the game and can be upgraded to homing darts in the 3D versions, among others.

Aside from blasting through impenetrable barriers like Brinstone, Missiles destroy enemies on the spot with a single hit. The rapid-fire ability in the original game is what sets it apart from most weapons of a similar stripe and continues to make the classic Nintendo game age so well.

3 Morph Ball

Samus’ Morph Ball (aka Maru Mari) is one of the most strategic weapons that can be used to defeat the most formidable bosses in the series. The item enables Samus to reduce her body size to a tiny sphere 0.8 inches in diameter, allowing her to escape enemies easily and hide in the tightest quarters in the galaxy.

In terms of attacks, the Morph Ball is best when used with a bomb, offering quick-strike attacks that Samus can easily evade in an instant. In later franchise entries, the Morph Ball upgrades into even deadlier Spider Balls and Hyper Balls, which make Samus even more difficult to defeat. The latter upgrades would be really cool to see in a movie version of the classic NES game.

2 Screw Attack

While technically an upgraded Power Suit, fans may not know that the Screw Attack turns Samus into a flying butcher blade of death and destruction. The suit enables Samus to give off energy from various points in her armor while twirling through the air. As such, the attack can annihilate creatures on first contact.

Perhaps even more valuable, the Screw Attack allows Samus to blast through otherwise indestructible obstacle blocks and wall jump over tall structures. Like all of Samus’ most iconic weapons, the Screw Attack only becomes stronger as the games advance.

1 Justin Bailey

Justin Bailey is the name of a famous Metroid cheat code that allows Samus to access her biggest arsenal at once. By entering the password, Samus will be equipped with her magenta leotard, a vicious Arm Cannon, and have access to the aforementioned Screw Attack and Morph Ball weapons. As such, it’s the best overall weapon in the game.

Additionally, the password will provide access to the Boots and protective Varia Power Suit, which increases speed, reduces damage, and insulates Samus from extreme weather. Obtaining these at once makes Metroid far easier to conquer.
