Metroid Dread Proves Samus Aran Deserves More Metroid Games

The Metroid franchise has never been a massive seller when compared to other Nintendo properties like Mario and Zelda. There are a number of reasons it took so long to develop Metroid Dread, but the almost complete lack of releases featuring the iconic bounty hunter Samus Aran in the last decade (it was 19 years between mainline Metroid entries) is a disservice to the character. In its culmination of the plot revolving around the Metroid/X crisis, Dread serves as a reminder of Samus’ legacy, and earnestly makes a case for Samus to make more regular appearances in future titles. To put it simply: Samus deserves more Metroid games.

The revelation of Samus actually being a woman at the end of the original Metroid in 1986 is an empowering and iconic moment in gaming history. The lack of cinematic cutscenes in the NES era meant players were dropped on the planet Zebes with little preamble, and even the game’s instruction manual deliberately misleads the player with an air of mystery, referring to Samus as a man. Samus has gone on to save the galaxy multiple times, yet her reputation in gaming has been stymied by the series’ inability to remain in the limelight.

Metroid games are typically light on story, instead keeping players focused on the signature gameplay, but Dread managed to bring a satisfying conclusion to a story arc that began began over 30 years ago. Samus bravely – and singlehandedly – faces the daunting adventure of Metroid Dread, reminding players of her nearly unwavering confidence. It would be a shame for the series to go back into dormancy and let such an important character fade from the spotlight, or let Dread’s fantastic gameplay go without a follow-up.

Where Can More Metroid Games Go After Dread?

The original Metroid story arc may have concluded with Dread, but the galaxy is large, and there are plenty of opportunities for Samus. Though development had to be restarted, Metroid Prime 4 is supposedly still on the way, despite still being without any footage beyond a title card. The Prime trilogy takes place early in the series’ timeline, between Metroid and Metroid II, but more Metroid games could explore plenty of avenues for where Samus goes following Dread. Her reputation amongst the Galactic Federation would make her a prime candidate for any number of interesting missions.

The success of Dread following the series’ long hiatus may have also brought many new fans eager to experience more Metroid games. If Nintendo decides to move ahead with a sixth mainline Metroid, some players would undoubtedly be keen on trying older titles in the interim. A Prime trilogy rerelease has been long rumored, but remaking old Metroid games like Fusion for Switch could make Samus’ legacy more accessible than it is currently. Samus Aran is an important figure in video game history, and the effusive reception of Metroid Dread proves that she should not so easily be left underutilized again.
