Ever year at this time, we begin to steadily accelerate toward the onslaught of games that will engulf us come the Holiday season. Thankfully, a few publisher have finally wised-up to the notion that we gamers might like to play some big, marquee titles before Black Friday. In just that spirit, Nintendo is all set to spring Metroid: Other M upon us at the end of August.

Samas Aran’s latest adventure caused quite a buzz at Nintendo’s last two E3 Press Events. Co-developed by Nintendo and the Itagaki-free iteration of Tecmo’s Team Ninja, Other M looks to be both a new direction for the series and a return to some of the mechanics that Metroid was built on. Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi sums it up succinctly: “The concept was ‘the latest in gameplay with the simplest of controls.'”

Given that we are barely four weeks away from the game’s launch, we can expect the entirety of Nintendo’s formidable marketing prowess to be thrown behind Other M any minute now. But until that campaign hits full force, we can tide ourselves over with this new trailer for the game.

The first half of the trailer is heavy on exposition, and if you, like me, neither read nor speak Japanese, it may not add up to much. The second half, however, is jam packed high energy, hyperkinetic gameplay that has to be considered Team Ninja’s contribution to the game. Have a look at the Metroid: Other M story trailer.

Clearly, the action in the game has received a lot of attention, but the story is just as important. So much so, in fact, that the cutscenes in the game, along with some pre-recorded gameplay, will be watchable as a two hour movie in Other M’s Theater Mode. Says Yoshio Sakamoto, father of the Metroid series:

“We placed just as much weight on enjoying the story as we did on the action aspects of this game, but it’s hard to fully communicate a storyline in a video game with just one playthrough. At the same time, though, it’s asking a lot of players to beat the game twice to get it all, so that’s where the idea for that mode came from. It lets you make a lot of discoveries, things you missed or dialogue that makes more sense in retrospect. I hope it helps people understand the story better.”

As much as I enjoyed the Retro Studios developed Metroid: Prime games, I’m excited for a new take on the series (I’m also pretty pumped for Retro’s Donkey Kong Country Returns). My hope is that Other M doesn’t completely abandon Metroid’s traditional themes of exploration and isolation in favor of Team Ninja’s trademark over-the-top combat.

Ranters, what are your thoughts on the latest Metroid trailer? Is Other M taking the series in the right direction?

Metroid: Other M releases August 31, 2010, exclusively for the Ninendo Wii.
