NBA player Meyers Leonard dropped an anti-semitic slur on a Call of Duty: Warzone Twitch stream the other day and all of his sponsors and FaZe Clan are now distancing themselves. Meyers Leonard has been suspended by his team, the Miami Heat, and is currently being investigated by the NBA for the controversy.

Meyers Leonard has since “apologized” for the affair, claiming he didn’t know what the word meant. This seems kind of hard to believe given he appears to hesitate before spitting the word out on his Twitch stream. It came off far more as an attempt to salvage some good PR, but really only made matters worse for himself. This is one of many incidents of people not knowing the power of their words, such as a FIFA player who racially attacked real-life player Ian Wright after he lost a match of the video game using the player’s virtual counterpart.

Following the Warzone stream, Meyers Leonard is now suffering a dramatic loss in sponsorships from the likes of Origin, Astro Gaming, and Scuf (via Kotaku). Popular eSports clan FaZe Clan has also announced it will part ways with Leonard, despite not sponsoring him. It’s likely the two parties will not play together or make any content together going forward.

The case of Meyers Leonard is not the first time a notable figure has made an anti-semitic remark and lost tons of money in the process. In 2017, a similar thing happened to PewDiePie after a Disney-owned company dropped him for offensive behavior. Even though the YouTuber is still prospering, it was a deeply controversial moment in his career that has lingered over him for years and has made many turn against him.

It’s unclear if or when Meyers Leonard will return to the NBA. It’s entirely possible that the bluntness of his remark will lead to a permanent removal from the game. The athlete isn’t just some minor player either, he’s a remarkable 7 feet tall and started 2 games in the 2020 NBA Finals with the Miami Heat. Many have drawn links between bigotry and gaming, including the ADL. With Leonard’s reach and fame, it’s dangerous for him to be spouting anti-semitic rhetoric that younger children could begin spewing privately as well. Leonard has been previously criticized for standing during the national anthem while his teammates and the Denver Nuggets kneeled in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. He was the only one standing; he stated that it was out of respect for the United States military, as his brother is a marine.
