MHAs Deku Is Becoming Like Marvels SpiderMan

Marvel’s Spider-Man is no longer the only hero who has both a danger warning system and the ability to produce a vine-like substance because now Deku from the My Hero Academia manga has gained both of those powers.

Spider-Man possesses many signature moves and abilities that help him stand out from a host of other heroes. One of the most prominent is undoubtedly his webbing, though, for sake of this argument, the best comparison with My Hero Academia’s Deku is Peter Parker from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and, for a short while, a few comic continuities. In these incarnations of the character, getting bitten by the radioactive spider bestows upon Peter Park the ability to produce his own webbing himself without having to invent web cartridges and the web fluid inside of them. Spider-Man mainly utilizes this gift to sling himself around like a vine and to entangle his foes as a sort of restraining mechanism, among others. One of his most unique abilities, however, is Spider-Sense, which allows him to immediately detect danger before it happens. This awareness manifests as a sort of tingling sensation that becomes much more pronounced the closer or more prominent the danger becomes. Spider-Sense is also what helps Peter Parker swing around using his webbing with relative ease.

In My Hero Academia, Deku is later able to utilize the quirks of the former One For All users in addition to the actual One For All quirk itself. By chapter 295, Deku acquires the quirks of the fifth and fourth wielders, Daigoro Banjo’s Blackwhip and Hikage Shinomori’s Danger Sense, respectively. Blackwhip, which is a power that generates dark tendrils that can be used like a whip, first erupts out of Deku during the Joint Training Battles with Class 1-B in chapter 211 when he is filled with the urge to capture his opponent Monoma. Since then, he’s produced Blackwhip’s tendrils to grapple off buildings, carry buses and attack Shigaraki during the Paranormal Liberation War. The similarity between that quirk and Spider-Man’s web slinging ability is undeniable.

Like Blackwhip, Deku becomes aware of Danger Sense’s presence when it just initiates on its own. As the name implies, the quirk warns him of impending danger like some sort of sixth sense. Deku doesn’t experience a tingling sensation like Spider-Man, however. It’s just something he feels in his head. In this instance, the quirk is first triggered when All For One takes over Tomura Shigaraki’s body near the end of the Paranormal Liberation War. Danger Sense later proves most useful to detect and dodge Lady Nagant’s curving bullets as she attempts to collect him for All For One so he can steal Deku’s One For All quirk.

Although My Hero Academia’s Deku was essentially transforming into Spider-Man earlier on, he has since transcended Peter Parker exponentially. This is thanks to him not only acquiring more quirks from the many other One For All users helping him, but also identifying new ways to utilize these techniques in innovative ways. One time, Deku essentially spits a Blackwhip tendril from his mouth like a tongue instead of his arms. Spider-Man has undoubtedly learned some new tricks over the decades, but his capabilities are severely limited by what he acquired from the radioactive spider that bit him so long ago. Meanwhile, quirks are much more versatile and customizable overall, not to mention the fact that Deku possesses the powers of multiple heroes.

While Deku’s Blackwhip mostly resembles the web-slinging ability of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, it’s interesting to note that, like most renditions of Peter Parker who had to invent the web cartridges and web fluid, Deku also relies on certain augmentations that he wears to complement his abilities. But he didn’t invent them himself. He had to rely on Mei Hatsume’s technical expertise and tinkering prowess. So while Deku’s abilities vastly surpass Spider-Man’s, Peter Parker is much more scientifically inclined that Deku and can create his own inventions to augment his power.
