Michael B. Jordan reveals that he does not believe his portrayal of Killmonger in Black Panther was that of a villain. The first solo outing of Black Panther, starring the late actor Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, was a cultural reset and the second highest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The filming of the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is currently on production hiatus due to complications with Letitia Wright’s injuries, expected to resume production in January.

Erik Killmonger is a former U.S. Navy SEAL and was introduced as the main antagonist in Black Panther, played by Jordan. He is the son of Prince N’Jobu (Sterling K. Brown), who was tragically killed by younger T’Chaka (Atandwa Kani), due to revealing the existence of Wakanda to Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis). The death of Killmonger’s father prompted him to be on the path of vengeance, seeking to avenge his father’s death and take his rightful seat in Wakanda. Killmonger’s ultimate goal was to achieve the global liberation of the Black community through world domination.

According to a conversation with Bleacher Report, Jordan explains why Killmonger is not a villain in Black Panther. Mutually agreeing with the host of the interview, in terms of interpreting Killmonger as someone who is “a necessary part of the conversation,” Jordan explains that his character shared the same concern for his people as T’Challa, but “had a different way of going about getting it done.” Watch his full response below:

Many have grown to sympathize with the rival of Black Panther because of his understandable motivations and origins to achieve his means, with Jordan agreeing that his character’s argument wasn’t completely baseless. Thus, some may consider Killmonger to be an anti-villain as his desired ends are coherent, but his means of achieving those goals were objectionable. Similarly, fans understood the motivations of Magneto (Michael Fassbender/Ian McKeller) in the X-Men series, despite his methodologies, as people recognized his ideals in attempting to dismantle the oppression mutants face by those who do not possess the X-Gene.

A good anecdote of an antagonist is constructed through their relatable story, with T’Challa and the viewers coming to understand and mourn Killmonger’s rooted suffering by the end of the film. Despite the tragic departure of Killmonger in Black Panther, many have found solidarity in understanding the motivations behind Wakanda’s contender due to the continued discrimination and mistreatment of the Black community today. If anything, people have come to comprehend Killmonger as a victim, being a byproduct of his environment.
