James Gunn has shared a new behind-the-scenes photo from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 showing off Martinex pre-CGI. With Guardians 2 currently in theaters, Gunn is still keen to get people out to the theaters. As such, he’s been sharing a number of looks behind the scenes of the movie, as have various others involved in the production. Of course, it’s not as if the film needs much of a boost. After over a month in theaters, the sequel has already broken past $800 million worldwide, with $366M coming from the domestic box office. Still, Gunn has long won favor from fans for sharing insight into his movies.

One of the best tidbits so far has been footage of Gunn doing the motion-catpture work for Baby Groot’s dance in the opening of the film. It’s a small detail, but one that shows how dedicated he is to his films and how much fun he has on set. Thanks to that dedication, Gunn will be one of the key people helping to shape the future of the MCU along with Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers. Part of that work will come in Vol. 3, which Gunn is already hard at work on.

In the meantime, Gunn has shared another behind-the-scenes look at Guardians 2, this time in the form of a photo with Sylvester Stallone and Michael Rosenbaum. The shot comes from the scenes on Contraxia where we first meet Stallone’s Stakar and Rosenbaum’s Martinex:

#GotGPicoftheDay with Martinex (@themichaelrosenbaum) and Stakar (@officialslystallone). Rosey is one of my best friends in the world – we’ve been laughing and crying together for many years – and Sly is of course one of my great heroes, a true icon, and funny as hell. So these days on Contraxia were some of the most fun during the production of #GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol2. The movie is still out and going strong in theaters all over the world, so go see it this weekend!!! #gotgvol2 #film #movie #behindthescenes #marvel #marvelstudios #instagood #sylvesterstallone #Ravagers

Those dots on Rosenbaum’s face are for the motion-capture that allowed his character’s crystal skin to be added in with CGI. It’s a nice look at the work that goes into a character like Martinex; someone who underwent a few changes before the final version was settled on. Given the character didn’t do much in the film and Gunn and Rosenbaum are such close friends, expect both Martinex and the other original Ravagers to play a bigger role in Vol. 3.

Though the new film is still three years away at minimum, it’s going to open up a number of new storytelling avenues. Gunn is already considering tweaking MCU canon for the next film, teasing a deeper exploration of one of the movie’s main characters. Meanwhile, Nathan Fillion’s cut cameo as Simon Williams from this year’s movie has left the actor hoping Wonder Man can make his way into the MCU.

With the cosmic side of the MCU set to expand exponentially in the coming years, we’re likely to see a lot more faces join the universe. Until then, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will have to hold fans over.
