Midnight Mass is a tragedy as much as it is a horror. Which of the characters from Mike Flanagan’s series got the ending they deserved?

Midnight Mass 5 Characters That Got Fitting Endings (& 5 That Deserved More)

Netflix’s Midnight Mass featured many incredibly written and acted characters who found themselves in incredibly unexpected and horrific situations when a vampire was introduced to their quiet island. The horror series from Mike Flanagan has led to many discussions about the nature of faith, doubt, life, and death, as have many of his previous shows.

It became gradually apparent, as the series continued, that there was a very slim chance the cast of characters would get happy endings of any kind. But even as Crockett Island burned away to nothing, some received much more fitting endings than others, and some definitely deserved better in the end.

10 Fitting: Ed And Annie Flynn

The beloved couple of Ed and Annie Flynn came just about as close to a happy ending as Midnight Mass allowed. Although initially separated during the massacre at St. Patrick’s, they found each other again on the streets among the chaos, tearfully embracing in one of the series’ most poignant moments.

When it became clear that there would be no surviving this final night on the island, Annie began to lead the island in a hymn, and Ed soon followed. As they faced their inevitable deaths by sunrise, Ed and Annie were holding onto each other tighter than ever. As written by Shakespeare, and quoted in The Haunting of Hill House, journeys do end in lovers meeting.

9 Deserved More: Joe Collie

Joe Collie was far from a perfect man. Long before his struggles with alcoholism, Joe made a grave mistake on a hunting trip when he fatefully shot young Leeza Scarborough and left her paralyzed. But in his few episodes in the series, Joe was trying, consistently, to become a better man.

He loved his dog Pike more than anything in the world, and Pike’s savage killing at the hands of Beverly Keane was one of the series’ darkest moments. After Leeza forgave him, Joe became a changed man, attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and vowing to try and forgive himself. Tragically, his recovery would be cut short by his gruesome murder, ironically committed by the man in charge of his AA meetings.

8 Fitting: Leeza Scarborough

In an island filled with characters grappling with demons and corruption, Leeza Scarborough was one of the few true innocents. Her life was changed forever when she was shot by Joe Collie, which led to her requiring the use of a wheelchair for much of her teenage years. When she was seemingly healed by Father Paul’s miracle, everything she knew about the world changed, except for her steadfast faith.

But rather than play into this ableist narrative that has aged poorly in other horror franchises, Midnight Mass showed that Leeza’s paralysis was not something to be overcome, but rather a part of who she was. As one of the sole survivors of Crockett Island, Leeza gleefully welcomed the return of her inability to feel her legs because it meant the nightmare of potential vampirism was over.

7 Deserved More: Dr. Sarah Gunning

Midnight Mass 5 Characters That Got Fitting Endings (& 5 That Deserved More)

As the lone doctor on Crockett Island, Sarah Gunning knew better than almost anyone just how out of control things were getting when she began to witness blood burning in the sunlight. A woman of science and reason, Sarah provided invaluable insight as the outsiders of the island worked to try and prevent the inevitable massacre at the church.

But little did Sarah know, her existence was one of the many reasons that any of this horrific violence and suffering happened at all. Sarah deserved to know the truth about her parentage before her final moments, and she deserved better than the tragic fate of dying in her parents’ arms while refusing to become a vampire.

6 Fitting: Mildred Gunning

As an elderly woman, Mildred Gunning grappled with dementia, seldom recognizing her surroundings but always remembering her daughter, Sarah, and her lost love, John. But in her older years, and as a consequence of her faith, Mildred had perhaps a stronger grasp on her place in the world than most other characters in the series.

“We made our choices. We lived our lives. She grew up, and we faded away, and that’s how it’s supposed to work. It’s supposed to be over,” she told John. As she and John sat with Sarah’s body in their laps and waited for the sunrise, Mildred looked as if she had completely accepted her fate, tearfully kissing John one last time as she awaited the death she had long expected.

5 Deserved More: Riley Flynn

As the original main character, Riley would easily have been expected to make it until the end of the series. But his life was tragically cut short when he sacrificed himself to warn Erin of the dangers and evils looming within St. Patrick’s.

Even though Riley may have been at peace in his final moments, he still never felt as though he deserved to be alive at all. Riley deserved the chance to find peace and purpose in his life. But even more heartbreakingly, Riley always understood death as a way of giving back to nature. By meeting his fiery end on the rowboat, he was robbed even of that desperately held source of solace.

4 Fitting: Father Paul Hill

Midnight Mass 5 Characters That Got Fitting Endings (& 5 That Deserved More)

Father Paul Hill, or Monsignor John Pruitt, was responsible for everything horrible that happened on Crockett Island. Because he acted out of his own selfish desire to live his life over again in a different way, he damned the entire population of Crockett Island by bringing the vampiric monster back to live among them.

There was no way, therefore, that his character could escape the series still alive. However, there was poetic yet devastating justice in the way that he met his end. When he made his plans originally, he wanted a second chance at life with Mildred and Sarah. In the end, he died with both of them by his side.

3 Deserved More: Sheriff Hassan el Shabazz

Midnight Mass 5 Characters That Got Fitting Endings (& 5 That Deserved More)

When Hassan arrived on Crockett Island, he did so in order to find a place that would be safe for himself and his son. He chose Crockett for its remoteness and its lack of violent crime. Crockett Island was supposed to be everything he and his son needed to start over.

But Crockett was nothing but hell for both Hassan and his son. He was never respected by most of the island and was subjected to racism and violence alike, including having to watch his own son’s forced conversion. Hassan’s death was one of Midnight Mass’s most heartbreaking moments, as father and son performed traditional Muslim prayers until they both succumbed to their own injuries.

2 Fitting: Bev Keane

Midnight Mass 5 Characters That Got Fitting Endings (& 5 That Deserved More)

There may have been a literal monster in Midnight Mass, but the true villain of the series was always the quietly nefarious Beverly Keane. Bev always believed herself to be a better Christian and a better person than everyone else, even though she weaponized and misinterpreted religion for her own means.

Bev killed a dog, recruited innocent bystanders into covering up murders, and escalated the vampiric turning of the island into an all-out massacre in one of Midnight Mass’s scariest moments. Bev’s death, alone and sobbing and digging desperately to try and hide in the sand, ultimately showed that her faith was never genuine. It was all an act for her, and one she couldn’t carry out until the end.

1 Deserved More: Erin Greene

Erin Greene was a woman whose life was filled with one horrific situation after another. She was routinely abused as a child by her alcoholic mother, and even after escaping Crockett Island, she wound up in a similarly abusive marriage. When she returned home as a prodigal daughter, it was meant to be the fresh start she so desperately needed.

But over the course of Midnight Mass, Erin lost her baby, the man she always loved, and eventually her own life. Even though it was her heroic final act to destroy the monster’s chance of surviving, Erin deserved to make it out of Crockett once and for all in the end. She deserved a life with her baby and with Riley. She deserved to live.
