The new Caves & Cliffs Update in Minecraft will give intrepid explorers more content to experience, such as all-new subterranean biomes, novel mobs, and copper ore, which oxidizes realistically once placed in the world. The upcoming laundry list of changes and improvements to the game’s infinite worlds comes in addition to this year’s Nether Update, which overhauled the eponymous hellscape for the better.

The gaming world’s premier crafting and survival game has been busy as of late: Minecraft is among the most recent titles to cross over with Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with Minecraft characters Steve, Alex, Zombie, and Enderman joining the melee. Meanwhile, Minecraft’s PSVR update went live recently, allowing PS4 players able to experience the sandbox survival game in full VR without any missing features or content. Despite all this, Microsoft-owned developer Mojang still finds the time to provide ample updates for the title that spawned the brand, and its upcoming changes are easily on par with this year’s Nether Update.

The Caves & Cliffs Update’s core content was highlighted on the official Minecraft YouTube channel today, showcasing the new biomes, mobs, and crafting materials – such as copper ore. Mojang Studios expanded further on the video’s highlights in an official Minecraft blog post, discussing the various types of caves, such as lush caves and dripstone caves, and “a brand new archeology system, which adds a very cool sense of history and storytelling element to the game.” The archeology system adds excavation on top of the digging mechanics players already experience.

In addition to new caves, the Caves & Cliffs Update will introduce new items and mobs to the biomes. Items such as crystals, telescopes, bundles, and the sculk sensor block can be found during players’ exploration. Hostile mobs known as the Warden and the Axolotl are also making an appearance, the former of which patrols the redesigned cave systems, ready to attack daring spelunkers. Finally, the update also introduces copper ore, which Mojang says will “bring an aging element to the game.” Players who build with the new material will notice it start to turn green over time, indicating its age and mostly functioning as a bragging right for fans who want to prove their Minecraft veteran status.

Minecraft has always been a game about innovative artistry and survival. Players get to illustrate their creative prowess, as well as demonstrate their combat effectiveness. Anytime a video game allows its community to push the mechanics to their limits – and show the developers their love for the game – something of value is always occurring. In a time when people are still stuck at home, creativity is a phenomenal tool to endanger boredom.

Out of all the new content offered in the Caves & Cliffs Update, the aging element implemented with the copper ore is the most intriguing, because it adds much more atmospheric immersion to fans’ creative products. New hostile mobs and caves to explore are all well and good, but it’s the artistic expression that many Minecraft players enjoy the most. The next step is being creative in how fans attack those hostile mobs, such as the Warden and Axolotl.
