Minecraft: How to Breed (& Feed) Axolotls

Axolotls are useful pets players can have in Minecraft who assist them in their underwater battles. Here’s what’s needed to breed more of them.

Mobs, short for mobile, are an integral part of the Minecraft experience. While some of these AI entities are hostile monsters, a number of them are animals, like cows and pigs, that players can use like livestock. Others, like wolves and ocelots, are pets that can aid in combat. As the years progress, fans speculate what mobs Mojang will add to the game, and with the highly anticipated Caves & Cliffs update, Axolotls were finally added to the world.

These rare salamander species from Mexico are an aquatic companion that can aid players in fights underwater. Not only can they play dead to avoid further damage from enemies, but defeating a monster they’re in combat with grants the player health regeneration. They are a perfect ally for taking on underwater temples, and just like other mobs, they can be bred. Here’s what players need to know to raise an army of axolotl companions.

Finding Axolotls

• Players cannot breed axolotls if they don’t have any! To find them, head to a cave below sea level and look for any underground ponds. Specifically, they’ll spawn underneath the coordinate y63 in areas not lit up by light. Given the treacherous nature of the caves they dwell in, players will want to equip themselves properly with enough weapons and resources before spelunking below the ground.

Carrying Axolotls

• While they can be bred in any body of water under the right conditions, it’s much safer for players to do so while on the surface or in their own home base. Players can carry many axolotls at once provided they have the means to do so: a bucket filled with water, with one axolotl per bucket. These amphibious creatures can’t last long without water, so prepare several buckets before searching for them. After right-clicking an axolotl with a water bucket, they’ll automatically be added to the player’s inventory. Additionally, scooping an axolotl up with a bucket will prevent them from despawning, or disappearing when out of the player’s range, so players can name them with a name tag item and keep them as pets permanently!

Breeding Axolotls

• Once players have more than one axolotl with them, they’ll be able to breed more so long as they have tropical fish. While there are many variants of these fish, any of them will do. To catch them, grab a fishing rod or some more buckets and head to a warm or lukewarm sea biome, where they can be found swimming throughout the water. Once players have obtained an amount they deem appropriate, they can head back to their axolotls and right-click one of them using the newly caught tropical fish. So long as the fed axolotl has another one nearby, a baby will spawn similarly to how other mobs function. If players have any leftover tropical fish, they can use them on the babies to speed up their growth.
