Minecraft Player Adds Zelda’s Ocarina of Time To The Game

Minecraft and Zelda have been brought together once again: a Reddit user has shown off the working Ocarina of Time they created for their Zelda map.

A Minecraft creator has used the game’s data and resource packs to make a playable version of the iconic ocarina from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The formative Nintendo 64 classic is still one of the most beloved games in the Zelda series, and continues to inspire all sorts of fan-made works.

There have been countless player builds based on Nintendo properties throughout Minecraft’s long history, and there’s always been plenty of crossover between the two fan bases. Even Nintendo hardware has shown up in the game, as seen in a recent example where a player recreated the Wii Remote in Minecraft. Not all of the crossovers have come from fans, though; Nintendo itself has recognized the community overlap and added officially licensed content in the Switch version of the game. The company also brought Minecraft into one of its own titles: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now includes Steve, the recognizable default character from Minecraft, as a playable DLC fighter.

The Legend of Zelda is often adapted to Minecraft as well, as can be seen in projects like this working ocarina built by Reddit user CinTrielya. The item can play all the same notes and even uses the same user interface as the N64 original, making it a near-perfect reproduction of the Ocarina of Time. It includes all of the memorable tunes from the game as well, and some of them even alter the world in the same way they did when Link would play them in the original game. CinTrielya demonstrates by playing the Song of Storms, the Sun’s Song, and the Song of Time.

According to CinTrielya, this creation didn’t require any actual mods or modding tools. They were able to build it in the base game using Minecraft’s data packs and resources, along with some NBT storage via console commands. The item is part of a much larger Zelda-themed adventure map that CinTrielya has been working on for a long time, and one can see their rendition of Kakariko Village in the ocarina demonstration.

Different games being made in Minecraft is always an intriguing thing, especially when they don’t need mods to function. CinTrielya says this idea has taken a lot of work and there’s still a lot more to go, but hopefully it won’t take another full year like this elaborate Minecraft build of the Great Fox did. Clearly, many Reddit users are already excited to jump into this map as soon as it’s made available.
