Two clever Minecraft-playing siblings built an in-game chess board using item frames. Mojang’s hugely popular survival sandbox game gives players the tools to build almost anything their mind can conjure. While Mojang does continue to put out official updates, such as Minecraft’s upcoming Caves & Cliffs Part 2 update, players also continue to innovate using the resources already available in the game.

Despite launching over a decade ago, Minecraft is still supported by developer Mojang through updates and expansions. The title’s latest expansion, Caves & Cliffs Part 1, added many new features to the title’s highest peaks and lowest caverns. Various new underground minerals, such as copper and amethyst, make the mining part of Minecraft a bit more robust. Meanwhile, new creatures were added to various regions, such as the mountainous goat and the underwater glow squid. Caves & Cliffs Part 2, set to arrive by the end of 2021, will include even more new additions such as torches and a fix to biome changes’ temperature clashes in Minecraft – which will make worlds generate a bit more realistically.

While official updates are great, Reddit user MastaEcoval and their brother has used in-game items to create a clever Minecraft chess set. The chess game utilizes item frames, which allow players to display their items for all to see. By arranging these frames in a grid, chess can be played by simply taking items out and moving them to a new frame. It looks like the clever players are using helmets as pawns, boots as rooks, horse armor as knights, pants as bishops, chest armor as the queen and skeleton heads for kings. Different materials for each armor set allow the game to feature two distinctly-colored sets of pieces.

The Minecraft community seems endlessly creative, with new and original constructions popping up even a decade after the game’s launch. Many of these builds are simple and effective, like MastaEcoval’s chess set, but other builds can be much larger and more complex. Reddit user Eonlio recently recreated the canals of Venice, Italy in Minecraft, using mods to give the build even more realism. This impressive and gorgeous creation’s mods helped give the water a more realistic appearance, and added in more items to match the city’s iconic architecture.

Creating a functional chess set in Minecraft seems like it could be a complex task, but MastaEcoval and their brother came up with a simple yet effective solution. Using item frames as squares, and items themselves as pieces, allows full freedom of movement. Each in-game item also reflects its associated chess piece, with horse armor being a particularly appropriate stand-in for a knight. The Minecraft playerbase has proven to be exceptionally creative, and MastaEcoval’s chess set appears to demonstrate that creativity.
