Today, October 16, fans tuned in to the Minecraft Live virtual event, which saw Mojang Studios tease Minecraft Caves & Cliffs Part 2 and confirm a tighter release window. Mojang hosted the digital festivities on its YouTube channel and Minecraft’s official website. Given that Caves & Cliffs Part 1 arrived in early June, Minecraft Live viewers were most eager to learn more about the next major update.

Though it represents the smaller of the two, the update’s first half packed in a whole host of new content, from new blocks and animals to plants and extra craftable items. The additional creatures, in particular, included the non-hostile Axolotl, along with the underground Glow Squid and Goats, the latter of which roam around mountainous regions. Some of the plants that joined the game were of the decorative variety, the likes of the Glow Lichen offered up practical uses as a low light source. Caves & Cliffs Part 2’s content will move mountains – quite literally – thanks to a terrain overhaul.

During Minecraft Live, Mojang shared a few fresh details about Caves & Cliffs Part 2. For one, the update will roll out with a “blending” process that adds new caves and mountains to pre-existing player worlds. So a world with a previously built mountain will appear post-update with a cave system underneath as if the caves were always there but hidden. Moreover, the developers announced the second half of the Caves & Cliffs content remains on track for this year; it’s specifically scheduled for sometime in the next “month or two.” A quick one-minute preview also took center stage at the digital event, as seen in the video below (via GamersPrey).

Since the year continues to slowly draw to a close, it’s hard to say for sure when Mojang may lift the lid on its release plans for the next eagerly-anticipated Caves & Cliffs update. But at least fans can rest assured the patch will arrive in the near future.

Some form of a Minecraft-centric gathering has taken place every year since 2010, barring the canceled 2014 event. It started humbly in 2012 with a few dozen people, then the picked up steam with 2011’s MineCon. The “con” name fell by the wayside with 2020’s digital festival; Minecraft Live was the settled upon title for this year’s virtual festivities.
