There are a lot of TV shows out there that combine period drama with detective work. What makes Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries different from the others is a unique combination of an exotic setting, a colorful historical time period, and some thrilling character interaction. The show has won a few awards for its depiction of historic Melbourne, and the series is just as popular as the books on which it is based.

That doesn’t mean everything about Miss Fisher is perfect, although she’d be anxious to tell you otherwise. Even the best of shows have room for improvement. Now that the popularity of the original show has inspired a spin-off, maybe a few of the less entertaining details have been improved.

10 Love: The Setting

When it comes to period drama, there seems to be a set formula: British country estate in the Victorian Era, Old West Ranch, medieval castle, and the like. When did you ever see a period drama that was set in an Australia city in the 1920s? Audiences haven’t seen anything like this since the Thorn Birds or The Man from Snowy River, and those were stories about the Outback. Seeing Australia depicted through the lens of a bustling city is a nice change from the usual stereotypes about both the 1920s and the Land Down Under.

9 Needs Improvement: Villanous Confrontations

We saw tons of these in the first season and were primed for more, but the show never quite delivered. The main villain, Murdoch Foyle, took up most of the space in the first season. That was a great storyline, but it had the disadvantage of taking the spotlight away from some other potential baddies.

Lin Chung’s grandmother is a force to be reckoned with, and the culprit in the very first episode, Lydia Andrews (Mirando Otto of Eowyn) fame, blew us all away with her potential for evil. They were interesting characters that simply disappeared.

8 Love: Real Historic Landmarks

Melbourne was one of the few cities in the world that had a roller coaster during this time period, and the famous Flinder’s Street Station was brand-new. Occasionally, famous landmarks and other locations appear in the show, even as a focal point for the plot. The house that Phryne lives in is a real historic landmark, or, at least, the exterior is. It’s a tourist attraction that anyone can visit.

The other noted location is Luna Park, the location of the equally famous roller coaster, The Grand Scenic Railway. Phryne and Jack end an episode with a ride on the iconic coaster, which is still in operation today.

7 Need Improvement: Diversity

The characters, drama, and storylines in Miss Fisher’s Modern Mysteries are great when it comes to working-class struggles, upper-class corruption, and feminist causes. Let’s face it, however, the show won’t be winning any diversity awards anytime soon. It’s a fact that Melbourne was settled by Irish and British immigrants, but the region was already home to several aboriginal communities that still inhabit the area as part of the metropolitan community and always have.

The Gold Rush of 1850 brought the world to Melbourne, and post-war immigration from the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe was high. Lin Chung, the Chinese tycoon, is Phryne’s steady boyfriend in the books, but, in the show, he’s regulated to an extended fling and only lasts a couple of episodes. It’s jarring to see these groups missing. Considering the historic accuracy the rest of the show has, this is a glaring omission.

6 Love: The Clothes

You’re not going to see a lot of corsets or big white wigs anymore, but clothes from the 1920s never really went out of style. That’s the great thing about everything Phyrne wears. You could fill your contemporary closet with all of her clothes, wear them to work and socialize, and nothing would be amiss.

It’s a huge part of the immersion factor when you’re getting into the time period. Ironically, while most of the costumes on the show are accurate to the time, some of Phryne’s outfits break that rule to give her outfits some extra flair.

5 Need Improvement: Class Warfare

Ever notice that Cec and Bert never eat in the dining room? Even Mr. Butler is regulated to the kitchen, while Phryne and Dot can move freely between the “main” part of the house and the more modest part. It’s difficult for a modern audience to put this in context and understand what this means. It’s just what it looks like: class segregation.

We get some idea of the tensions on the ground between certain demographic groups, so it’s not left out of the show completely. For example, there’s a brief scene in the initial episode when Jack and Cec trade some harsh words regarding communism, but interactions like this seem superficial on the show and only serve to drive the plot along when required.

4 Love: 1920s Trends

We’re not just talking about clothes here. It’s great that the show also utilized fairly new trends at the time, like motorcars, tennis, and bathing costumes. A lot of things weren’t just big in the 1920s, they were big in Australia. Tennis was huge at the time, with an organized league predating Phyrne Fisher’s time, and, of course, where else would going to the beach quickly become a normal activity but Australia? If you don’t understand what a “bathing hut” is, this show will teach you.

3 Need Improvement: Current Events

The show includes a lot of details when it comes to popular culture, but we don’t hear about politics very much. Melbourne is a big city in the 1920s, embroiled in all kinds of national and local political upheavals. The battle between Melbourne and Sydney for national capital status started at the turn of the century and didn’t really end until the late 1920s when the city of Canberra was finished, just to cite an example. It might have been interesting to hear more about this on the show.

2 Love: Memories of Post-Wartime

Miss Fishers Mysteries 5 Things We Love & 5 Things That Need Improvement

Unlike other certain period dramas that romanticize wartime, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries meets the issue with a grim honesty. The aftermath of WW1 seems to be the common thread throughout many of the show’s main characters regardless of class or background, with most of the main characters as war vets, including Phryne herself.

The war would have been over for only about ten years, and Australian troops were represented in both the Asian and European fronts. The effects of the war would still be a major issue. Aside from costumes or settings, this is one of the show’s most realistic details.

1 Need Improvement: Nurse, War Veteran, Detective

We get a lot of details about the war when it comes to how it affected everyone generally, but, as far as specific details about Phryne herself, we don’t hear enough about her experiences. The episode about her past as a model in Paris had the audience drooling for more. Perhaps this is indicative of her character in the sense that she would prefer not to think about it, a common thread between herself and other main characters. Still, for the fans, it would have been interesting.
