The Son Of Jim Phelps Returns For Revenge

Jim Phelps was a surprise villain who killed off IMF agents through planning and the use of henchmen in the first Mission: Impossible. While there’s no way for him to return, Redditor GrayMan108 thinks “the villain is actually Jim Phelps son who wants revenge, who wants the world to see Ethan how they once saw his father: a traitor.”

According to them, the plot could see Phelps’ son brand Ethan as a traitor in a plot to discredit the protagonist and make him see how his father is perceived. It would both stick close to the series’ usual formula of Ethan clearing his name while acknowledging the first movie’s events for Ethan’s past to catch up with him.

The CIA Are The Bad Guys

The CIA always proves to be a thorn for the IMF by butting into the latter’s operations and inadvertently aiding the villains to make things worse. Redditor OprahNoodlemantra believes that “Rather than IMF not being trusted and needing to do the mission with govt support, they should switch it up so IMF is wrong and trying to stop the CIA.”

They think the plot should focus on the CIA turning out to be the real bad guys, meaning the IMF will need to stop their own government link. It would certainly be cathartic for many viewers to see the IMF take the fight to the CIA, as its constant clash with Ethan Hunt’s team already makes the CIA villains to some degree.

The IMF Is Looking To Replace Ethan Hunt

Redditor Catch_Clean thinks a search for Ethan’s replacement is on and the story will see questions about Ethan’s value in the Mission: Impossible series, claiming the government will “want the IMF members to have some deeper conversation about their future because even if Ethan doesn’t retire, he is 53 years old.”

Ethan will actually be 58 by the seventh movie’s events, having been born in 1964. The Redditor’s idea has its merit, but it’s likely that the film will only use it to kickstart the plot. Ethan could be seen proving himself to still be the best by foiling the latest plot. It’s also possible that his intended replacement will turn out to be one of the villains.

Ethan Will Undergo A Change In Personality After Letting Go Of Julia

There’s little doubt that the franchise offers the best Tom Cruise action movies to be made, but Redditor LOG4NLUCKY is of the opinion that some change will be incorporated. According to them, “without Julia, Ethan is just a man who does literally everything to get himself killed. So I think 7&8 will go even deeper to explore his personality.”

The seventh film will be a two-parter to conclude with its sequel, so there’s a good chance that this idea could be adapted. After all, Julia was Ethan’s moral compass of sorts, in that she represented his need to live a normal life. With Julia no longer his responsibility, the next story can feature Ethan going through an identity crisis to learn who he is without her.

Ethan & Ilsa Will Have A Doomed Romance

Things never stay good for Ethan in the long run and Redditor Seethi110 claims that “Ilsa and Ethan become romantic, and Ilsa is killed at the end of 7 as a cliffhanger.” The series had earlier hinted at a similar story with Julia until she was revealed to be alive, which would make Ilsa’s death a bold new move.

A big cliffhanger is needed to hook fans into the next movie, so Ilsa’s demise will have the necessary impact. Moreover, Fallout had ended with the implication that Ethan and Ilsa became a couple, which could play out as part of the story in the seventh film to set up her death that Ethan will likely avenge in the sequel.

Ethan Hunt Plays The Mentor Role

There are certain mistakes from the Mission: Impossible series that the next entry needs to fix, such as Ethan failing to have a protege as he briefly did in the third part before she was killed. Redditor GrayMan108 claims the plot will Ethan “train a younger protégé in 7 and 8 then have that protégé become the main character.”

According to them, the story of both sequels will be about Ethan taking along a student for missions in order to name this person as his successor. While that sounds really extensive to fit in two movies, it would be a solid subplot. Ethan could be the main focus as before but the addition of a protege can payoff at the end by handing them the reins.

Ethan Will Become The New IMF Secretary

Redditor thebookofgorman has a simple basis for the movie’s story, writing “I’ve always figured they might keep the series going with Ethan as the secretary of the IMF.” While that doesn’t dive into the core plot, they do have a good idea for how things can kick off.

With Ethan selected as the new IMF Secretary, the story can have many places to go, seeing as he won’t be limited by the rules and regulations imposed upon him by an authority figure. Ethan as the Secretary could see him take matters into his own hands and use his new power to truly undergo missions that seem impossible.
