Mister Miracle Has Been Erased from the DC Universe

Spoilers for Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom #2 ahead!

Scott Free, the former Mister Miracle, has been seemingly erased from the DC Universe, and it is on his successor to find out why. In Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom #2, Shiloh Norman, who was once Scott Free’s apprentice, is confronted by a mysterious person claiming to be Free’s daughter—but Shiloh has no idea who Free is. The issue is on sale now in print and digital.

Mister Miracle is part of the Fourth World saga created by Jack Kirby for DC Comics in the early 1970s. It told the story of the conflict between the forces of good on New Genesis, headed by Highfather, and the forces of evil on Apokolips, ruled over by Darkseid. Scott Free was the son of Highfather, sent to live on Apokolips as part of a truce between the two worlds. He developed a reputation as an escape artist, and once he finally escaped Apokolips, he came to Earth and took on the name Mister Miracle, making a living as a daredevil escape artist. He is married to Barda, a former Female Fury. Shiloh Norman is his protégé and has also taken on the mantle of Mister Miracle. Scott Free has made sporadic appearances in the DC Universe since his debut, but now he is gone—and no one remembers him.

The issue opens with Mister Miracle Shiloh Norman fighting a fearsome opponent, who reveals herself to be N’vir Free, the daughter of Scott Free and Barda. She calls herself the true inheritor of the “Miracle Mantle” and tells Shiloh that he is soiling her parent’s reputation. Shiloh is confused—he has never heard of Scott Free, or Barda!

This was a shocking statement on Shiloh’s part, especially in light of the fact Scott Free trained him. Now the question is: what happened to Scott and Barda? Why does Shiloh not remember his one-time mentor? Is Scott’s absence linked to the rebirth of the multiverse? Or is it somehow connected to the ambiguous conclusion of Scott Free’s mini-series? Darkseid, Mister Miracle’s nemesis, is making moves across the multiverse, preparing for…something. Did Darkseid somehow erase Scott and Barda as part of his master plan?

This issue raised many questions, and fans will have to wait until next month to get answers, but Mister Miracle Scott Free’s erasure from the DC Universe is alarming. Mister Miracle: Source of Freedom #2 is written by Brandon Easton, with art by Fico Ossio, colors by Rico Renzi and letters by Rob Leigh.
