A Mortal Kombat 11 fan redesigned the MK11 roster in Mortal Kombat: Deception’s art style, imagining what the 36-character select screen would look like in the 2004-era fighting game. There have been many installments to the Mortal Kombat franchise, with 11 mainline titles and 26 in total including spin-offs, crossovers, and updates to the main series. While there seems to be no end in sight for the gory combat series – especially given the recent success of the film reboot – fans are still actively engaged in the game’s history. And despite NetherRealm moving on to other projects, the Mortal Kombat community is still actively engaging with older titles.

During the summer, Injustice 3 trended on Twitter after it was confirmed NetherRealm would end support for its most recent Mortal Kombat game, MK11. There were two years of dedicated support for MK11, with continuous DLC content since its 2019 launch. Several patches have served to nerf or buff characters in the game in an effort to give MK11 more competitive viability, while others have added new characters to the game’s lengthy roster. Several 80s action movie stars were added to MK11, including John Rambo, RoboCop, and The Terminator, and other famous faces like The Joker and Spawn joined, too. NetherRealm’s consistent support helped prolong MK11’s life, but as with many big games, the studio was always meant to look towards the next project. And while the community waits for that project – whether that’s Injustice 3 or a Marvel vs. DC fighting game – fans still remember Mortal Kombat games of the past.

Reddit user nikita_bein redesigned MK11’s roster in Mortal Kombat: Deception’s art style. The 36-character select screen is complete with almost all of MK11’s characters, including the DLC expansions. Nikita_bein displayed some characters on the roster as if deciding which MK11 character to play, with Mileena, Baraka, and Shao Kahn getting spotlights in the video. Each character displayed has their own difficulty rating and three selectable variations, completing the Mortal Kombat: Deception aesthetic.

Mortal Kombat: Deception was well-received at launch and helped push the franchise into the console age. Having arrived on all major consoles at the time, including PlayStation 2, Xbox, and then GameCube a year later, the game racked up praise from both critics and fans. What was most impressive to many was Mortal Kombat: Deception’s art style, which was unique at the time, not only from other games but from Mortal Kombat installments of the past. Its 27-character roster also included more moves and more fatalities than previous games, pushing the boundaries for the Mortal Kombat series.

Nikita_bein’s redesigned Mortal Kombat 11 roster shows that though NetherRealm has officially ended support for the game, the community is still actively engaged. And until Mortal Kombat 12 starts to see the light of day, Mortal Kombat fans will have to relish in the 26 previous titles already available.
