Phil Dunphy is Modern Family’s resident “cool dad.” Aside from being a realtor, his favorite job in life is being a father to his three children. He’s constantly rooting for his kids no matter what they’re dabbling in and he truly adores his wife, Claire.

Phil is a true optimist and aims to spread positivity. It was he who said he would love for the Super Bowl to end in a tie because it would mean twice as many parades. But after 11 seasons of Modern Family, there are plenty of things that fans forgot about when it comes to Phil’s hilarious past.

10 Phil Had Two Girlfriends Before Claire

As goofy as Phil is, he makes it known that he was a real ladies man back in the day… And by “ladies man,” he had two girlfriends before settling down with Claire.

He dated a woman named Denise (who was introduced in the first season) in high school but quickly dumped her when he met Claire. However, when Denise came to visit Phil and Claire, the two women found out he was with them both at the same time.

Before Denise, Phil was with a woman named Carla Concannon. Carla was important to Phil because he lost his virginity to her while “Nobody Does It Better” by Carly Simon played in the background.

9 Leap Day Is One Of His Favorite Days

Phil Dunphy isn’t a man who only celebrates the major holidays; he celebrates the smaller ones too. In fact, Leap Day is his favorite holiday. When February 29th rolled around, Phil took off from work and planned a fun day of trapeze lessons with his family.

However, he was devastated when his favorite day was tainted by Claire, Haley, and Alex’s menstrual cycle. In a cringeworthy storyline, Phil feared their behavior would ruin his special plans. He tried to get the girls to stay at home but his plan backfired and his favorite day was ruined by his own doing.

8 He Wasn’t Always A Realtor

Phil makes it known from the start that he’s a real estate agent and he loves what he does. He has fun at work and really connects with his clients. Gloria once said it’s impossible to lie to Phil, which is why he does so well at his job because his clients wholeheartedly trust him. However, in the episode “Crying Out Loud,” Phil is ready to celebrate Alex’s senior ditch day but is distracted when he sees the Rialto Theater under construction. He tells the kids that before he became a realtor, he worked in construction and helped build the theater from the ground up.

7 Phil Is A Fully Licensed Hair Stylist

Phil Dunphy is a man of many talents. Whether it’s cheerleading, building model planes, creating the Dunphy Tuck, or doing construction, there aren’t many things that Phil hasn’t tried before. In fact, Phil gets braver as time goes on and changes for the better.

In “A Hard Jay’s Night,” viewers learn that Phil has also been a hairstylist. He became fully licensed in college as a way to pay for his cheerleading gear. He later uses his love for shampooing hair as a way to get the truth out of his clients. He did this with his kids to see what was going on in their lives and found out that Alex tried beer.

6 He Has An Unspoken Respiratory Problem

From the surface, it doesn’t appear that Phil has any serious medical issues to be concerned about. When Claire went to the hospital for her undiagnosed heart condition, Phil was upset that she never mentioned it before. This could have been a smart time for Phil to disclose any possible issues in his own life but he didn’t. Surprisingly, in “Undeck The Halls,” Phil and Claire found a cigarette burn on their couch and were on a mission to find out who did it. Phil said it definitely wasn’t him because he had a “respiratory problem.”

It could have been a continuity issue as to why this was never brought up again but it’s noteworthy nonetheless.

5 He Has Ties To Australia

After Grace, Phil’s mom, passed away, he and the family made a trip to Australia where she had family ties. Phil was eager to be in Australia because he wanted to feel closer to her. Although she and Phil’s dad lived in Florida, Grace’s family was from Australia and she and Frank had their honeymoon there, which is when Phil was conceived.

The episode was emotional for Phil but had plenty of comedic moments from Luke and Manny on Bondi Beach and from Lily when she was picking out souvenirs.

4 He Was A Wedding DJ When He Met Claire

Fans can’t help but notice a few timeline discrepancies when it comes to Phil and Claire’s relationship. The couple said getting pregnant with Haley was a mistake but they followed through with the pregnancy and their relationship anyway. They later eloped and had two more kids. However, in later episodes, Claire noted that she graduated from college and had a sparkling career with a big hotel chain. There doesn’t seem like a lot of time for Claire to go to college, have an sparkling career, and take care of a newborn. Nevertheless, before Claire and Phil found themselves pregnant, Phil was a wedding DJ when they first met! Perhaps this was another side gig he did outside of college to pay for cheerleading.

3 His Underwear Prophecy

In the episode “Catch Of The Day,” Phil explains his morning tradition and how it leads to the kind of day he’ll have. Every morning before he takes a shower, he slips off his boxers and kicks them in the air so he can catch it. If he catches his boxers he’ll have a good day. If he misses them, he’ll have a bad one. On this particular day, he missed his boxers and as suspected, he had an awful day at home. He fell out of a window, got a papercut, fell off his chair, lost his keys, got in a fight with a squirrel, and the horrible day goes on…

2 He Sleepwalks While Doing Magic

In the episode “Red Alert,” viewers find out that Phil has bouts of insomnia and that he’s also prone to sleepwalking. One night while Haley and Dylan were up late talking, Phil came downstairs with his magic hat on ready to perform while in an insomniac-trance; thus, why Haley dubbed him the Great Snoozedini.

1 Phil’s Diverse Education

Not only did Phil attend college, but he was a collegiate cheerleader, part-time hairdresser, part-time wedding DJ, and he also (apparently) attended trapeze school! In the episode “Benched,” he compares having a father-in-law is like walking on a tight-rope, which he can do because he went to trapeze school. Knowing his love for the “trampoline arts,” hearing that he attended trapeze school isn’t too shocking, but it sure isn’t talked about enough.
