Modern Family accomplished quite a bit in all the years the series was on the air. Audiences watched the kids grow up and the adults develop as they underwent changes in jobs, addresses and goals. All the while, their struggles made audiences laugh and relate to whatever the characters were going through. Compared to the show’s very first season, a lot of things had changed by the time the series finale aired eleven years later.

Haley certainly became more mature and considerate, and Phil and Claire made more time for themselves as a couple. Plus, several relationships in the family improved too. But which character achieved the most by the end?

10 Haley’s Future

Claire and Phil, especially the former, worried about Haley’s future. She wasn’t very responsible, and over the years, she made quite a few mistakes, including getting arrested while in college. However, Haley did mature over the course of the series and even became a wife and mother by the finale.

She had grown up a lot and had become more responsible and considerate. While they were always proud of their daughter, Claire and Phil were happy to see her happy and living the life she wanted.

9 Claire & Phil Made More Time For Themselves

In the season 1 episode, “Hawaii,” Phil tries to treat the trip to paradise as the honeymoon that he and Claire never had, but that doesn’t exactly pan out the way he had hoped. They do get to have a beautiful wedding ceremony with everyone present, though.

Yet, as the series goes on, the husband and wife were seen to make more time for one another. They took spontaneous trips to Paris and they were seen to go out on more date nights together. By the end of season 11, they agree to finally go on the RV road trip they always wanted to go on.

8 Cam Found Something To Do Outside Of Being A Stay-At-Home Dad

In the season 1 episode, “Travels With Scout,” Cam temporarily replaces the drummer in Dylan’s band. He genuinely enjoys himself and is proven to be quite a skilled drummer. Unfortunately, he is soon kicked out of the group, which leads to Cam confessing that he was going stir crazy at home.

He obviously loves Lily and lives for being a parent, but he wanted something to do for himself beyond that. By the series finale, he had found his dream job as a football coach in Missouri.

7 Alex’s Identity

In “Come Fly With Me,” Alex goes out on an outing with Gloria after getting frustrated with Claire over the suggestion that she wears one of Haley’s dresses to an upcoming wedding. As Manny mentions to Claire, Alex is tired of competing with her sister and wants her own identity.

Alex certainly accomplishes this by the season 11 finale as the viewers had seen her “grow out of her sister’s shadow” and have different goals too. As the series goes on, Claire realizes how hard Alex works and how much pressure she’s under to be successful. From that point onward, she sees Alex in a new light and tries to help her with her problems, which strengthens their mother-daughter relationship.

6 Claire Had A Career Again

When Claire was visited by an old friend, she found herself regretting, albeit briefly, leaving her career behind to raise a family (“Moon Landing”).

However, by the end of the series, Claire decides she wants to get back into the corporate world again and starts working with her father at his company, Pritchett’s Closets & Blinds. By the end of season 11, Claire also manages to acquire her dream job, becoming the Senor VP of Organize ‘Em.

5 Mitchell Wanted To Be A Better Parent To Lily

Mitchell was concerned about his abilities as a parent, especially in the season 1 episode, “Run for Your Wife.” He’d accidentally bonked Lily’s head off the doorway arch and then later mistakenly locked her inside the car. Following that, he and Cam had a heartwarming conversation about their strengths and weaknesses, and how that made them a great pair and good parents for Lily.

As the series went on, Mitchell and Lily developed a good relationship. Mitchell became the kind of parent he wanted and was always capable of being.

4 Mitchell Wanted To Have A Better Relationship With His Dad

In the very beginning, it became clear to all that Mitchell and Jay didn’t have the best relationship. For Mitchell, the estrangement between the two began after he had told his father that he was gay (“Fifteen Percent”). Mitchell had also revealed that Jay still struggled with Mitchell’s relationship with Cam, which was quite evident when Jay introduced Cameron to his friends as “a friend of Mitchell’s.”

However, over the years, Mitchell and Jay’s relationship gradually improved. Not only that, but Jay and Cam were seen to grow closer too, bonding over football, cooking, and bowling. Jay even starts to call Cam his “son.” Mitchell always wanted Jay to accept him as he was, and the fact that he gradually changed over the course of the series meant a lot to Mitchell.

3 Gloria Wanted To Mend Her Relationship With Claire

As many fans know, Gloria and Claire didn’t have the best relationship in the early stages of the show due to the fact that Claire believed she was a “gold digger” (“Coal Digger”). Gloria had already expressed doubts and insecurities that Jay’s family didn’t like her, so hearing Claire’s opinion confirmed her worst fears.

However, after the two end up settling things after Claire jumps in the pool to earn her forgiveness, the viewers saw them make more time for each other. By the end of the show, Claire and Gloria were seen to be the closest of friends (sometimes even each other’s confidantes). All she wanted was for her and Claire to mend this break, which they gradually did.

2 Phil Wanted A Better Relationship With His Father-In-Law

Back in Season 1, Phil desperately wanted his father-in-law, Jay, to like him. There was still clearly some tension and unresolved issues as Phil had eloped with Claire, and Phil wasn’t necessarily Jay’s favorite person. In “Come Fly With Me,” Jay even goes so far as to hit Phil with his model airplane on purpose, injuring him.

As the series progressed, their relationship improved. While not perfect, at least Jay wasn’t flying planes into Phil’s face anymore, and that meant a lot to Phil, as well as Claire.

1 Dylan & Haley

From the beginning, Haley and Dylan had a nice, albeit stormy, relationship. They were on and off for years but ultimately ended up together, which is something they both wanted all along. They are married with twins by the end of the series, and living their best lives. It’s pretty cool that Haley’s high school sweetheart became the ultimate love of her life. Clearly, she and Dylan were meant to be since Season 1.
