For the past 10 years, we’ve been blessed with the families of Modern Family. The beauty of the show is the fact that it shines a light on the “new” modern family. Whether there’s a large age gap like Gloria and Jay, or a same-sex couple like Cam and Mitchell, families are created around love.

While the show is wrapping up its 11th season, one of its best characters is Phil Dunphy. The husband of Claire and father to Haley, Alex, and Luke, Phil is one-of-a-kind. His obsessions with cheerleading, Dirty Dancing, and being the “cool dad” is what makes viewers keep coming back for more.

And while us viewers may be obsessed with Phil’s antics, his kids are constantly embarrassed by his youthful ways. With over 230 episodes (as this article is published) to Modern Family’s name, we’re sure Phil has more embarrassing moments with his name on them in 2020. But for now, we’re ranking 10 of his biggest!

10 AWESOME LAND

In the sixth season, the Dunphys are livid after some unsavory neighbors move in next door. To make matters worse, their neighbors make a wager that they’ll have the scariest house in the neighborhood come Halloween.

Ever the Halloween junkie, Claire decides to take off from work and decorate the entire home with absolutely frightening decor. The problem is, Phil had already dressed up the house as Awesome Land—aka everything Phil finds awesome. From puppies to rainbows to candy, Phil’s Awesome Land rubs his kids the wrong way, drawing unwanted attention.

9 WTF

It’s in the show’s first couple of episodes that we really get to know Phil and the kind of dad he is. He clearly loves his kids and thinks his wife is too good for him, but what’s better is he thinks he’s a cool dad. Explaining to the camera that he knows all the kid lingo these days, he says, “I’m hip, I text. ‘LoL’ – laugh out loud. ‘OMG’ – oh my god. ‘WTF’ – why the face?” Thinking that ‘WTF’ means “why the face?” is exactly what Haley has nightmares of.

8 POWER WALKING (AND THE TIGHTROPE)

We all know Claire is an avid runner and takes spin classes from time to time. But Phil? Well, he stays in shape through some of the most embarrassing ways known to kids everywhere: power walking, strolling the tightrope, and using the Shake Weight.

It’s not every day we see a young man in his forties power walking, but when we do, it’s definitely Phil Dunphy. Just imagine looking out your window and seeing your father using Shake Weights while walking as fast as he can throughout the neighborhood. We feel for you, Dunphy kids.

7 CHEERLEADING

Another way Phil stays in shape is—drum roll, please—cheerleading! After cheering for his college, Phil takes cheerleading very seriously. As he states, “You know what a human pyramid is without hours and hours of practice? Ten obituaries!”. You see, cheerleading isn’t just a hobby for Phil — it’s a major part of his youth. He even tried to teach all his kids how to dance at one point or another throughout the series.

6 THE FAMILY AD ON THE VAN

Along with his pride at having been a cheerleader, Phil is also a proud realtor. Selling homes is a passion for him and he’s very good at it. But when work is slow, he’ll do just about anything to set himself apart from his competitors. One way in particular is when he put a picture of Haley and Claire on his car as a way to gain attention. The problem is, everyone who saw the ad thought he was selling the girls’ services…not houses. Not only was Haley embarrassed to the ends of the earth, but Claire couldn’t believe he put his family on blast like that. (Although she did appreciate the honks.)

5 WHEN DRONES ATTACKED

Phil loves experimenting and creating his own gadgets. But in one instance, the tables were turned when a drone was following his family around while they tanned by the pool. To get back at the drone, Phil, Luke, and Manny tried their best to attack it, only for Phil to fall into the pool while his pants fell off.

The drone caught footage of it all, put it on YouTube, and viewers everywhere saw their realtors privates. Poor Luke didn’t just see it happen in the flesh, but he also had to live with his friends watching it online.

4 ALEX & HALEY’S COLLEGE TOUR

It was a bittersweet moment for fans to see Alex and Haley get ready for college (considering they were the first ones to go). We watched all the kids grow from kiddos to teenagers to full-on adults. Phil and Claire were obviously excited and nervous about their spring chickens going to college, so going on a campus tour was best for everyone involved.

When it came to Haley, Phil took her to see the campus without Claire since it was his alma mater. The problem was, Haley wanted to venture off and hang with kids her own age while on the tour, but Phil wanted a few more minutes with his baby girl. After a few hours of not hearing from Haley, he realized she was at a frat party and bombarded the house looking for her, only to find that she was sober and drinking soda.

When it comes to Alex, well…He signed up to take a psych test and ended up breaking the air conditioner.

3 WHEN HE WAS LOOKING AT PORN (AND BLAMED HIS SON)

Everyone has urges and there comes a time when people are mature and responsible enough to act on them. Porn, for instance, can be found just about anywhere online, and just because Phil is a jolly dad with three kids and a wife, doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy it from time to time.

However, when Claire found a busty image on the computer, she instantly thought it was her son Luke who had the wandering eye. In real life though, it was Phil. Embarrassed, he told Claire he would handle the situation. But as it always does, the truth finally came out that it was Phil, making his kids gag.

2 WHEN HE PINCHED’S HALEY’S ROOMMATE’S BUTT

Fans were stunned when Haley actually got accepted into college. She’s not the brightest bulb in the shed so this was a big deal for her and her family. Enthusiastic as always, Phil wore a vintage Dunphy t-shirt and wanted to help Haley get her dorm room adorable and ready. After seeing a backside that looked just like Claire’s, Phil went up behind her for a pinch. He quickly found out it wasn’t his wife…it was his daughter’s new roommate. It only got more embarrassing when the daughter’s dad came into the rescue!

1 WHEN HIS KIDS WALKED IN ON HIM AND CLAIRE

Without a doubt, one of the most embarrassing things Phil has done to his children is having them walk in on him and Claire while they were making love. Of course, not locking the door wasn’t intentional, but when the kids surprised them with breakfast in bed, they were introduced to their mom and dad in an uncompromising position.

The kids ran away and left the house to think about what they just saw, while Phil and Claire panicked about how to explain “the birds and the bees” to their kids. It all worked out for the best in the end, but when something like this happens, it’s scarring, to say the least.
