ABC’s Modern Family hit the ground running with its unique mockumentary-style show about three collective families. But after 11 successful seasons and 201 episodes, Modern Family came to a close in April of 2020.

Now that fans have the time to look back on the series and rewatch old episodes, they’re taking their opinions to Reddit. Subreddits like “Modern Family unpopular opinions” have been created and they’re surprising to say the least. To take a look at some unpopular opinions, scroll below!

10 Is Joe As Lovable As He Thought?

Joe was the son of Jay and Gloria Pritchett. He came as a surprise to the family but ended up being exactly what Jay and Gloria needed at the time. As Joe grew, he turned into a mini Jay, which came as a shock to just about everyone. He was quick-witted and adorable but somewhere down the line fans found him “creepy.”

His “ladies man” persona didn’t feel right for some viewers and they disconnected from the character completely. Seeing how sweet and adorable Joe is, it’s striking that so many disliked him.

9 Manny’s Fashionista Persona Was The Worst

The character of Manny grew up in front of the cameras. What set him apart from the Dunphy children was that his style and interests were completely different. Manny was into theater, art, and poetry. He took the time to style himself and fancied a woman who did the same.

It was comical and cute that Manny was this way. However, one fan told Reddit that his “shtick” was “the worst thing in television history.” They did not find his desire for fashion and poetry admirable or interesting at all. In fact, it ruined the character for them.

8 But Some Thought Manny Was The Best Character!

While taking a look in Modern Family forums on Reddit, fans are torn on their thoughts for Manny. He may have been a whiny mama’s boy but fans appreciated his vulnerability. He was unlike anyone else in the cast.

Instead of hating on the character like the person above, one fan loved Manny “from start to finish.” While some fans liked Manny as a kid but not as an adult, this fan was consistent with their feelings for Manny. “I know he is universally hated but I think Rico’s delivery was on point, very charismatic and nice dude,” they said.

7 Cam & Mitchell’s Relationship Is Unhealthy

Cam and Mitchell were one of the most beloved couples on the show. They were both vastly different from each other but loved each other for their differences. It was because of their differences that they were able to work so well as a couple.

Cam made Mitchell loosen up while Mitchell helped Cam mature and take things seriously. But there were some fans who disliked this couple. As one fan told Reddit, “I just don’t like how Cam and Mitch frequently borderline cheating behavior.”

6 Some Fans Are Glad Haley Chose Dylan Over Andy

There was a roar from Modern Family fans when they found out Haley chose Dylan to be her life partner. There’s nothing wrong with Dylan per se, but a character like Andy gave Haley purpose. They both helped each other grow and mature into people they wanted to be. He also got along insanely well with Haley’s family. He was a mini Phil!

Sadly, they broke up and Haley fell back into the arms of Dylan. But not all fans were upset with this. “Dylan has a heart of gold and I have no problem with him getting back with Haley,” a fan told Reddit. In fact, some fans hated Andy’s character! “Maybe people really like the actor, but as a character within [Modern Family] I couldn’t stand him,” a Dylan supporter told the forum.

5 Alex Should Have Gotten Pregnant, Not Haley

In what has to be one of the most unpopular opinions on the show, some fans thought it was Alex who should have gotten pregnant instead of Haley! Many fans thought Haley getting pregnant was standard for the character. It was something that would happen to Haley, which is why fans weren’t too surprised.

Keeping that in mind, fans would have wanted Alex pregnant instead because that would have been totally challenging for her character. Fans pointed out that Haley was the “mini Claire” in the group, which is why she was pregnant but Alex’s pregnancy would have ruffled more feathers.

4 Cam Is Toxic

Is Cameron Tucker toxic? Some believe his comments and comedic moments weren’t funny at all. One fan said, “Cam is one of the most toxic sitcom characters I’ve ever come across.”

They thought Cam was manipulative, especially to his daughter Lily. And while he was petty, theatrical, and emotional, he was one of the happiest parts of Modern Family.

3 The Series’ Finale Sucked

After 11 long seasons, Modern Family came to an end in 2020. There was nothing else to be shown on the series. The children had grown up (except for Joe), the parents were becoming empty nesters, and fans have seen every storyline possible. It was the right time to move on from the series.

However, fans thought the series finale could have been better. One fan wrote, “The dialogue was exhaustingly contrived. It was nonstop talking, and everything was super literal and too on-the-nose.” With the Tucker-Pritchettes moving away, the Dunphy children moving out, Manny traveling the world with his dad, and Gloria becoming a working mom, fans felt cheated.

2 Lily Isn’t So Bad After All

There are a shocking amount of fans who disliked Lily Tucker-Pritchett. The adorable daughter of Cam and Mitchell was very monotoned and serious compared to her over-the-top dads but she loved them all the same.

Fans, on the other hand, did not. They found her cold, spoiled, distant, and boring. However, there was one fan on Reddit who was rooting for little Lily! “I like Lilly and don’t think the kid who plays her is a terrible actress at all,” they said.

1 Phil. Is. Annoying.

Phil has to be one of the most loved characters on Modern Family. His love for his family (and real estate) has no bounds. He would do anything for those he loves; not to mention he’s insanely hilarious! On Reddit, however, there are some fans who thought Phil was the downfall of the series.

When speaking about Phil and Luke, they thought the characters were “both annoying and incredibly stupid.” Some fans would argue that’s what set them apart from Claire—which is what made the couple work—but apparently his stupidity was enough to ruin the show.
