Modern Family Each Main Characters First And Last Line In The Series

In September of 2009, ABC released one of its most successful sitcoms to date, Modern Family. The series ran for 11 seasons and wrapped up in April of 2020. Over the years, fans have become attached to this modern family and have watched them grow from season 1.

With the series done and all of the actors moving on to different projects, fans can’t help but look back on the series with fond memories. After all, it wasn’t just the kids in the series who grew up in front of the camera; the entire Dunphy/Delgado-Pritchett/Tucker-Pritchett clan have evolved in their own ways.

10 Gloria Delgado-Pritchett

First Line: “Vamos, Manny! Kick it! Kick it!”

Last Line: “Why is this so hard? We’ve done this, like, seven times already today.”

When viewers first meet Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, she and Jay are newlyweds watching her son, Manny, play soccer. Gloria is first seen screaming to Manny and encouraging him to kick the ball. As the series went on, it became clear that Manny was more a theatrical-type than an athlete and Gloria should stay clear from the sidelines. In the final episode, Gloria is sad to see her family move on in different ways and takes a group selfie of everyone before Mitch and Cam leave for the airport with Lily and Rexford to start their new life.

9 Jay Pritchett

First Line: “Gloria, they’re zero and six, let’s take it down a notch.”

Last Line: “And that’s all a lot easier if you’ve got people who love you, helping you face whatever life throws at you. At least that’s what helps me sleep at night.”

Alongside Gloria at Manny’s soccer game was Jay. Unlike Gloria, Jay didn’t seem interested in the game at all and reminded her that Manny’s team hadn’t won a game all season and for her to calm down.

It took time for Jay and Manny to bond in the first season but when they finally connected, their relationship was irreplaceable. By the series finale, Jay is still the family’s patriarch and has the final line in the entire series.

8 Manny Delgado

First Line: “I’m quitting soccer. It is a game for children.”

Last Line: “Don’t you get it? [The poems] were all for you.”

Viewers don’t hear Manny’s first line until after his soccer game. After his team’s loss, he tells his mother that he’s quitting and that it’s too childish. It’s then that viewers realize how mature Manny is for his age. Out of all the kids in the series, Manny is the most consistent with who he is as a person and always has a good head on his shoulders. In the series finale, he and Luke are having an emotional moment before they both go their separate ways. Luke asked Manny why he never wrote him and poems but Manny assures him that all the poems he had written over the years were for him.

7 Claire Dunphy

First Line: “Kids, breakfast! Kids?”

Last Line: “Mitchell, I put the skating trophy in your suitcase because I want you to have it first so that I know you’ll come back.”

Claire Dunphy has the first line in the entire series. As she’s in the kitchen getting breakfast ready, she’s calling for the kids to come down and eat before school. It’s then that Haley comes downstairs in a mini skirt and Ugg boots and Claire disapproves of her outfit. That was the start of the rollercoaster relationship between her and her eldest daughter.

In the series finale, Claire and Phil prepared themselves as they’re about to become empty nesters. What seemed like such an exciting adventure with Phil turned into a nightmare; Claire wasn’t ready for a quiet house. But as the group takes a selfie together before Mitch and Cam leave, Claire tells Mitchell that she hid their skating trophy in his luggage as a reminder to come back home.

6 Phil Dunphy

First Line: “Kids? Get down here!”

Last Line: “I’m going to set an example and be the first person to let go… That was awful.”

As Claire is getting the kids’ breakfasts ready, she asks Phil for reinforcements. He then quietly asks the kids to come downstairs and to listen to their mother. From the start, it was clear that Claire ran a tight ship and Phil was happy to let her take the lead. And as the series went on, Phil became everyone’s favorite fun dad.

In the final scene, Phil is hugging everyone tightly but makes the first move in releasing from the group. He quickly learned he needed a few more minutes of hug time and latched back on.

5 Mitchell Pritchett

First Line: “Who’s a good girl? Who’s that?”

Last Line: “Cam, we only have a few minutes. Why don’t we take that family picture?”

When we first meet Mitchell, he and Cam are on their way home from a surprise trip to Vietnam to adopt their baby girl, Lily. With Lily in his arms, Mitchell’s first lines are making baby talk to his newborn. Seeing how happy he was to be a new dad was endearing. And to see how far he and Cam had come in the series finale was inspiring. Just as they came home to California in the first season, they were ironically leaving for the Midwest in the final episode.

4 Cameron Tucker

First Line: “Sorry, sorry, sorry, daddy needed snacks.”

Last Line: “Thank you for making me feel so welcome in this family. A family that taught me so much.”

When Cameron eventually makes his way to Mitchell on the plane, he apologizes to Mitchell and Lily because he needed snacks for the ride. He and Mitch made an embarrassing display in their first opening scene together as a couple but it was just a peek into what was to come for the rest of the series. By the series finale, they were now the parents of two kids making a cross-country move. His final lines were thanking his in-laws for making him feel so at home in their family.

3 Haley Dunphy

First Line: “Why are you guys yelling at us when we’re right upstairs? Just text me.”

Last Line: “I mean, it’s Mitch and Cam now but it’s these three next. Who knows when we’ll all be together again.”

The first time we meet Haley Dunphy is when she walks into the kitchen as her parents are scrambling around, getting ready for the day. She hilariously asks her mom why she was screaming for her from the kitchen when she could have just texted her. Haley’s sense of humor and addiction to her cell phone continued through the series but she slowly transformed into a young woman by season 11. In the final scene, Haley gets emotional when thinking about her siblings leaving the state, and when they would all be together again.

2 Alex Dunphy

First Line: “Luke got his head stuck in the banister again.”

Last Line: “We love you.”

It was clear from meeting Alex in season 1 that she was going to go on and achieve amazing things in the world. She was the brightest in the family and had a clear direction for her life. If it wasn’t for Alex’s first line in the series, Luke could still be stuck in the staircase! Nevertheless, in the finale, Alex appreciated Cam’s kind words about welcoming him into the family and tells him that she loves him. She then grabs baby Rex and heads to the front door to take a picture with the family.

1 Luke Dunphy

First Line: “I thought I could get out this time.”

Last Line: “How come you never wrote a poem for me?”

While the entire Dunphy clan is getting ready for their day, Luke is sitting on the steps with his head stuck in the banister. He told his dad he thought he would be able to get out “this time,” which means this has happened before. Luke’s head is typically in the clouds but he slowly came around and matured just in time for the final season. At the end of the series, Luke was planning on going away to college for the first time, which made his parents all kinds of emotional. His final line was asking Manny why he never received any poems from him during their time growing up.
