Modern Family’s 5 Best Guest Stars (& 5 Celebrities The Show Squandered)
Modern Family was such a popular sitcom, it drew celebrity talent like Edward Norton and Ray Liotta right away, with varying degrees of success.

For 250 episodes across 11 seasons, Modern Family was one of the most popular shows on TV. While most series need a while to find their feet and don’t become truly great until their third or fourth season, Modern Family figured out its voice and what makes its characters great right out of the gate. Within a few episodes, the show was attracting A-list talent for guest spots.
Everybody from Jordan Peele to Martin Short to Vanessa Williams made a guest appearance on Modern Family throughout its run. Some of the show’s guest stars were much more memorable than others.
10 Best: Edward Norton
In the season 1 episode “Great Expectations,” the brilliant Edward Norton became one of the first A-listers to guest-star on the show, playing the role of Izzy LaFontaine, the fictitious bass player of Spandau Ballet.
In an attempt to finally give Phil a great anniversary gift, Claire books him for a private concert at the house without realizing Phil doesn’t know who Izzy is.
9 Squandered: Matt Dillon
When DeDe comes to stay with Phil and Claire in season 2, she brings along Robbie, a young boy-toy played by Matt Dillon, who happens to be Claire’s ex-boyfriend, which makes things really awkward. While Robbie’s presence created a lot of great cringe humor, the character himself squandered Dillon’s talents.
Dillon has proven himself as a comedic actor in There’s Something About Mary and as a dramatic actor in Crash, but he was cast to play a one-dimensional jerk in Modern Family.
8 Best: Jesse Eisenberg
In the season 5 episode “Under Pressure,” Mitch butts heads with his environmentalist neighbor, played by Jesse Eisenberg. His attempts to appear green keep backfiring, like accidentally letting packing peanuts blow up the street into his neighbor’s yard.
At the end of the episode, Mitch makes amends with Eisenberg and invites him over for dinner. Lily says he can play with her dollhouse, but when he asks if it’s made from recycled materials, she quips, “Forget it.”
7 Squandered: Kevin Hart
Kevin Hart appeared in a couple of Modern Family episodes as the Dunphys’ next-door neighbor Andre, who befriends Phil when he sees him trying and failing to build a treehouse for Luke.
Hart has great chemistry with Ty Burrell, but the show never really did anything with Andre, possibly because Hart didn’t become a comedy superstar for another couple of years and the writers didn’t realize the talent they had on their hands.
6 Best: Matthew Broderick
When Cam gives Phil a guest pass to his gym, he meets a guy who hails from his alma mater, played by guest star Matthew Broderick, and invites him over to the house to watch the Bulldogs game while Claire and the kids are away.
Broderick’s character mistakes Phil for gay and thinks it’s a date, which Phil doesn’t help by growling at him, taking off his shirt, and inviting him up to the bedroom.
Bobby Cannavale won Emmy Awards for his guest appearances on Will & Grace and Boardwalk Empire, but he didn’t have such luck when he was cast in the Modern Family episode “Send Out the Clowns.”
Cannavale played Lewis, Fizbo’s old partner who wants to get the team back together. Cam’s clowning has always been one of Modern Family’s least popular storylines, and this episode finally ran it into the ground.
4 Best: Ray Liotta
After Haley, Alex, and Luke offered to give Mitchell a day of fun in lieu of getting him an actual birthday present, they’re hopelessly unprepared when he shows up at the house to cash in on it.
They decide to take him to Barbra Streisand’s house but find Ray Liotta living there. Luke mistakes Liotta for Streisand’s gardener before he takes them over to her new house.
3 Squandered: Jane Krakowski
Jane Krakowski guest-starred in a couple of Modern Family episodes as Donna Duncan, a fellow parent at the school, and Gloria’s arch-nemesis. Donna was completely unlikable every time she appeared on the show.
While Krakowski was given the freedom to humanize previous mean-spirited characters like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Jacqueline Vorhees, she wasn’t able to do that with a one-note guest role.
2 Best: James Marsden
When Mitch and Cam find a ripped Reiki massage therapist played by James Marsden in their hot tub in season 2’s “Slow Down Your Neighbors,” they decide not to call the cops and instead join him in there.
He claims to be living in the apartment upstairs, but then their landlady tells them no one’s living there. As it turns out, he’s living in Lily’s princess castle in Mitch and Cam’s backyard.
1 Squandered: Patton Oswalt
When Jay scored rooms in a luxurious Vegas hotel for all the adults in the family, Phil was excited to show off his new magic trick for all the top Vegas magicians. The head of the magicians is played by Patton Oswalt, and as the episode goes on, Phil keeps failing the trick until he eventually stumbles into an even better one by accident.
Oswalt is one of the funniest comics in the world and could’ve given a hilarious guest performance on Modern Family, but he was squandered on a role that was essentially a foil for Phil.
