New art for the recently announced Moon Knight show suggests Ethan Hawke’s villain could be Werewolf by Night. Hawke recently signed on to play the show’s villain opposite lead Oscar Isaac. May Calamawy (Ramy) has also been cast in the show in an undisclosed role as the series gears up to being filming in Budapest. Little is known about the show, leaving fans to fill in the blanks until Marvel releases an official synopsis.

Speculation as to which villain Hawke could be playing has run rampant, with many wondering which direction the show will go in and how it will tie into the larger MCU. Moon Knight isn’t likely to premiere until early 2022, but Marvel fans will have plenty of shows and movies to devour until then. The studio keeps things pretty close to the chest, meaning it could be a while before official details come out.

Until then, fans have been making art that suggests Hawke could take on various roles. ApexForm posted a new piece that shows off Hawke as Werewolf by Night. In the comics, Werewolf by Night is a man named Jack Russell, cursed with lycanthropy from his father. The poster sees the silhouette of a wolf-like character in a cityscape. Above the wolf is Hawke’s face, eyes a bright yellow.

Hawke is an exciting addition to the cast, and it will be a treat to see two accomplished actors like Isaac and Hawke go head-to-head. Moon Knight is also a chance to take the MCU to a darker place, with the character long seen as Marvel’s answer to Batman. How dark they’re going to go remains up in the air, though. Moon Knight has had many iterations over the years after debuting in the comics in 1975. Since then, Moon Knight has taken on many forms and many villains. The show’s first season is expected to have six 40-50 minute episodes, in line with a few other Marvel shows set to release this year.

Moon Knight will be one of the newer characters to debut in the MCU’s Phase 4, alongside She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Ironheart. The first few MCU shows will focus on characters from Phases 1 through 3 as they begin to transition into introducing newer characters that will likely be with the franchise for years to come. Just what role Moon Knight will play in the larger MCU story is still up in the air, but it will show off a new side to the franchise in the same way that shows like WandaVision and She-Hulk are set to do as the MCU continues experimenting with form and content.
