Moon Knight Chose a White Costume for the Most Hardcore Reason

In Marvel Comics, the character of Moon Knight has slowly grown from a lesser-known hero to one of their most popular properties this side of The Avengers. Often compared to the Dark Knight himself, Batman, mostly due to their similar backgrounds, use of hi-tech gadgets, and displays of overwhelming physical refinement to combat evil in all of its forms, Moon Knight is a force to be reckoned with when he hits the streets.

But unlike Batman and his usual monochromatic color scheme, Moon Knight doesn’t blend into the shadows to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. Instead, he dons an all-white suit that – as many characters in the Marvel Universe have pointed out in the past – does him no favors when attempting to get the drop on the bad guys. So that being said, why does Moon Knight even wear a white suit to begin with?

Premiering in the pages of 1975’s Werewolf by Night #32, Moon Knight, aka Marc Spector, quickly became an invaluable addition to the greater Marvel mythos. As a character that initially felt like a Batman rip-off, Moon Knight eventually developed enough of his own unique traits and drummed up enough popularity to receive a self-titled book a few short years later. Still donning the iconic white costume that he first debuted with, Moon Knight’s original get-up consisted of a full head to toe uniform with a flowing white cape and hood, a full white facemask covering, any number of gadgets and weapons tucked away in a nifty utility belt of sorts and, depending on the artist at the time, pieces of armor that were – you guessed it – entirely white.

But the reason for this post-Labor Day nightmare is something of an intriguing wrinkle in Moon Knight’s complicated history. Explained on more than one occasion as to why he chooses to wear white while fighting crime, Moon Knight’s reasoning is as simple as it is unsettling: he wants criminals to see him coming: Quite literally saying “Told him I don’t wear white to hide myself. I wear it so they’ll see me coming. So they’ll know who it is. ‘Cause when they see the white, it doesn’t matter how good a target I am. Their hands shake so bad, they couldn’t hit the moon.” Moon Knight immediately bucks the Batman-patented tactic of striking from the dark while simultaneously giving fans a totally badass, if not slightly crazy reason for wearing all-white.

With a costume design that has for all intents and purposes been a success for the character’s nightly escapades, it’s of no surprise that the same elements are found in most other iterations of the character. For example, when using the moniker of Mr. Knight the same all-white look stays the same and instead of wearing a traditional superhero costume as he is usually wont to do, Mr. Knight’s threads are replaced with a business suit, gloves, pants, and shoes, and eschews a hood and cape for a more simple face mask look that still shouts “come at me” regardless. It might seem like a brash move to many, but the effectiveness of Marc’s choice in color cannot be denied as he still effectively and adequately disposes of bad guys on a near-constant basis.

So while Moon Knight might get a makeover from time to time depending on the mission at hand and the artist holding the pencil, it can’t be denied that his all-white look is as iconic as it is practical. It might seem like insanity to purposefully want the criminals and scum of the streets to see him coming, but with more than a few screws loose in Marc Spector’s constantly divided head, it’s probably the sanest thing he’s ever come up with.
