Oscar Isaac has reportedly been cast as Moon Knight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and here’s what you need to know about the MCU superhero. Isaac, who has starred in several high-profile Hollywood movies over the last several years, is best remembered for playing Poe Dameron, one of the three main characters in Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy. His casting in the new Marvel show hasn’t been confirmed by Disney, but he’s reportedly in negotiations to play the Crescent Crusader in Disney+’s Moon Knight.

Currently, Marvel is developing seven live-action shows that will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Most, like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, are centered on established heroes from previous movies, but three of the announced shows (She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel) will focus on heroes new to the MCU. Like She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight will be making his live-action debut when his series releases on Disney’s new streaming service sometime in Phase 4. It was recently revealed that unknown actress Iman Vellani has landed the lead role of Muslim hero Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel, and now Oscar Isaac is the latest actor to be cast as a major Marvel Comics superhero in the MCU.

Marvel’s Moon Knight show is clearly making progress. In the same day that Isaac’s casting was first reported, news hit that the series had found its director: Mohamed Diab, who is known for his work in Egypt. As for what the story will involve, these details haven’t been announced as of yet. However, Moon Knight’s comic book history can shine some light on what audiences should expect from the Disney+ show.

Who Is Moon Knight?

Introduced in the pages of Werewolf by Night #32 in 1975, Marc Spector is the son of a Jewish rabbi, a former heavyweight boxer, and ex-Marine. After leaving his career in the Marines behind, Spector began hiring himself out as a mercenary until one job in particular sent him to an excavation site in Egypt. While there, he suffered a critical injury and was left for dead. Though death appeared inevitable for the mercenary, he was miraculously saved by a mysterious force revealed to be Khonshu, the Egyptian God of the Moon. In a vision, Spector spoke to Khonshu, who offered him a second chance at life by giving him the opportunity to become his appointed champion. Spector took the offer and became the costumed vigilante known to the people of the Marvel Universe as Moon Knight.

As Moon Knight, Spector was a street-level superhero in the same vein of Daredevil. For the most part, he operated solo, but has occasionally worked with teams of heroes like the West Coast Avengers. That being said, Moon Knight (by his own admission) is not a team player and does better on his own. While headlining his own comic, he developed a rogues’ gallery of his own and battled a number of unique threats alongside his love interest Marlene Alraune and pilot Frenchie.

One way that helped him to protect his secret life as Moon Knight was his decision to create two new personas. When not being Marc Spector, he was Steven Grant, a millionaire who owned an estate which he was able to purchase through the money he made from his work as a mercenary. He was also Jake Locksley, a seemingly ordinary taxicab driver. By living as three different people (four, if Moon Knight is included), Marc developed schizophrenia and struggled with bouts of mental instability. It came to a point where Marc’s other identities had become such an integral part of his life that he was unable to properly distinguish what was fake from what was real. This weighed heavily on Marc’s psyche and remains to be a problem for him to this day.

Thanks to Khonshu’s decision to save Marc and make him his champion, Moon Knight has been gifted with abilities superior to those of any mortal human. He possesses enhanced strength, agility, and endurance that correspond with the phases of the moon. For instance, when the moon is full, Moon Knight is at the height of his power.

Since he can’t always depend on the moon, Marc relies on an arsenal of gadgets similar to the kinds of weapons wielded by DC’s Batman. He carries a staff, crescent-shaped boomerangs, darts, bolas, and more. Due to his military and mercenary experience, Marc is well-trained in close combat, but what is perhaps his greatest asset is his trademark unpredictably. Often thought of as “crazy” by his fellow superheroes, Moon Knight is known for fighting recklessly and, sometimes, irrationally. One example of this happened during his stint with the West Coast Avengers. Moon Knight had to go up against Black Knight, a swordsman who outmatched him in terms of skill. To deal with this, he startled Black Knight by throwing himself in front of his sword. Black Knight, terrified of killing his opponent, recoiled and was swiftly defeated by Marc.

What To Expect From Moon Knight On The MCU

Moon Knight Oscar Isaacs Marvel Character Explained

It’s likely that Marvel’s Moon Knight show will invoke the tone and feel of the comic books. An element that’s sure to be incorporated in one way or another is the titular hero’s multiple personality disorder. By moving in this direction, this will allow the show to come off as a psychological thriller that puts a great level of emphasis on the emotional toll that being Moon Knight takes on Spector’s mind. It could be that the first few episodes will see Marc adopting multiple identities, and over time issues with maintaining different lives will begin to emerge. At the same, Marc will likely be busy fighting crime on the streets, potentially against established villains from Marvel Comics. Given that Moon Knight is one of Marvel’s more violent vigilantes, it’s expected to be darker than most MCU properties, but not so much that it will need to exceed a PG-13 rating.

Why Oscar Isaac Is The Best Casting Option

Oscar Isaac is a solid choice to play the Jewish superhero in the MCU. As a well-known actor, Isaac will help bring attention to a Marvel Comics character who is yet to be a household name. Also, Isaac being a Guatemalan-American actor makes his casting another positive step for Latino representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Furthermore, what was needed for Moon Knight is an actor with the talents to be able to convincingly pull off Moon Knight’s different personalities, including Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Locksley. Given everything that’s to be expected of Marvel’s live-action interpretation of the Fist of Khonshu, Oscar Isaac feels like the perfect fit for the role.
