More Fatal Frame Game Remasters Possible After Maiden of Black Water

It’s possible that even more Fatal Frame remasters could release after the launch of the upcoming Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. While the series is often cited alongside some of the greatest horror classics including the likes of Silent Hill and Resident Evil, many have yet to experience what the titles have to offer, in part due to Nintendo’s Fatal Frame exclusivity for the series’ fourth, fifth, and sixth releases.

The Fatal Frame games, also known as Project Zero, are recognized as some of the best survival horror releases of the genre. The games put players face-to-face with haunted locations and terrifying ghosts, pacified or harmed with a supernatural camera known as the Camera Obscura. The Japanese series hasn’t seen a new release since the original Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water launched for the Nintendo Wii U in 2014, but the franchise is set to resurface in just a few days’ time. Earlier this summer, it was announced that Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water would be getting the chance to reach new audiences with a multiplatform remaster, releasing on October 28.

In an interview with JPGames, Fatal Frame series director Makoto Shibata gave hope to fans awaiting more of the franchise for newer systems, noting that further remasters could happen. Commenting on the future of the beloved horror series, the developer stated that while nothing is currently in the works, it’s something he’d “like to consider” moving forward. Shibata told the publication:

“As this title was prepared for the 20th anniversary of the series, we currently don’t have any plans to develop any other remastered versions. However, the reactions we have received from everyone have [exceeded] our expectations, so I’d like to consider this moving forward.”

The possibility of more Fatal Frame remasters could depend on the success of the new version of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. If the game sells well, it will likely increase the chances of older games in the franchise also getting a new release. This would be a win for survival horror fans, as the earliest entry in the series dates back to 2001, with copies often expensive to get hold of. There’s also a Fatal Frame game that hasn’t yet released in the West, Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, a 2008 Nintendo Wii game that only launched in Japan, which may finally see a global release if interest in the series is renewed by Maiden of Black Water.

While the future of the Fatal Frame series remains unclear, the Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water remaster should help tide fans over until more news is revealed. The game will task players with exploring Mt. Hikami, uncovering the secrets and terrifying stories of its past while playing as different protagonists across various story missions. The multiplatform launch means those who don’t own a Wii U will finally be able to experience the latest Fatal Frame release across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch, just in time for Halloween.
